What BR or NOLA realistically could do is work with Houston’s NHL bid to get their farm AHL team.

Houston to the NHL is inevitable.

The AHL is high quality hockey. The problem with the Zydeco and their league is that it’s shite hockey and the whole thing is low-rent. Someone in Louisiana should grab that potential AHL team. It actually could be done.

Monroe Mocs are doing really well with attendance.

Does SHV play Monroe?

No. Shreveport plays junior hockey in the NAHL and Monroe is in the FPHL (Single A equivalent).

They're in the Atlantic Coast Collegiate hockey league (ACHA Division II) along with UGA and most of the SEC/ACC schools that don't play D1 hockey.

Have you seen the arenas that AHL and ECHL teams play in? We have nothing near that nice until LSU's arena gets built and theres no guarantee they'll spend the extra dough to have ice.

I disagree.

There's a small but passionate fanbase here that loves hockey. Other people would love it too if they gave it a chance.

But yes this league was incredibly low rent and disorganized. Its a low cost of entry but that low cost gets you poor officiating, insufficient medical support and arena security, selective enforcement of the rules, and disregard of the league's rulings on roster management. Which makes the whole thing feel like a joke.

I went to a Zydeco game in Biloxi this year. It was dark and dreadful and sparsely attended. The whole thing just felt off. That’s when I realized the league wasn’t even ECHL and it suddenly made sense. I will say that the downtrodden fans in attendance seemed very passionate about the team.

BR needs a team in a real league. The Zydeco was a step above high school hockey, just awful. An ECHL team would be awesome.

I'd agree that the league is a problem, but there is some talent in the Fed (and closing the gap on the SP, though the SP is still considered a step up). Guys have been called up/stuck up in the ECHL, obviously the SPHL, and there have been AHL tryouts in camp.

Obviously, the average talent is lesser than the leagues above, but still.

Hockey is hockey, and it's sad to see it gone.

There is smoke on the socials that the SP may be involved in hockey in the near future, but the River Center wouldn't be able to support ECHL hockey.

SP = SPHL

Same for Fed = FPHL and Coast = ECHL.

That sucks. The games were a lot of fun. BR really needs to get some ice before the next attempt to bring a pro ice hockey team in 2050.

Monroe is the only pro team remaining in the state, but there are four junior teams and LSU club team. Lafayette has the Drillers, Alexandria has the Blizzard, Monroe - the Rougarou and Shreveport the Mudbugs. LSU plays their home games at planet ice n Lafayette. Here's hoping another pro league comes this way,

Yes. I have. It’s called the River Center. Baton Rouge used to have an ECHL team.

Look, I know it’s not rigged out for the ECHL or the AHL anymore. But this is not the craziest idea in the world. Arenas can be built or modified if the right people are involved. What I’m saying is there is an opportunity there if someone wants to explore it. That’s all. No need to shut it down on concept.

The Centroplex has more seats than 18 of the 30 ECHL arenas.

In the ECHL a 5-6k seat arena that is nice and kept up to date is what you want.
