I actually left him off because he was injured so much and almost all of his damage came from the first 5 innings.
Do runs in the 1st 5 inning count less than the last 4?

Can somebody enlighten me a little more on this Guy Smyly cat? Got this on Wiki:
Did he really add 4 mph to his fast all at age 31? And can somebody break down rpms to me? I mean, I know what it literally means, but don’t have any idea what 2249 is in any kind of context. What’s league average? What’s good? What’s great?
Looks like he’s had decent stats throughout his career. I know you guys look at different analytics, but it seems like he’s had a pretty good ERA and WHIP most of his career except 2019 when he pitched for 3 different teams. Looks like that was his 1st year back after missing both ‘18 and ‘19. We expecting him to be plugged into the back end of the rotation or come out of the pen?

Smyly throws four pitches. His main pitch is a four-seam fastball at 91 mph, known for the fact that it explodes on the hitter. He adds a curveball at 77 with little depth. He has a cut fastball around 87, which has drawn praise for its late, darting movement into right-handed hitters and away from lefties. Since 2014, he has re-added a changeup in the 83 mph range that he throws almost exclusively to right-handed hitters. He will also mix in a slider (83–85) on occasion.
In 2020, his four-seam averaged nearly 94mph, at 2249 rpm while his curveball also increased to 80 mph average at 2153 rpm compared to 1950 rpm in 2019. The improvements were due to his longer arm swing, higher glove position off the raised front thigh at windup, and a faster arm speed at release, but also having well-recovered from Tommy John surgery.

Lots of these guys are going to Driveline. Driveline is the cutting edge of pitching. Biomechanics. How to maximize everything. Etc. Assuming he went there.

Do you even Sabermetrics, bro?

Clevinger having his second TJ tomorrow. The RPM drop with him in Cleveland turned out to be telling.

But all of our amateur GM's thought they knew more then AA and ripped him, some wanted him fired, for passing him up. Turns out he knew what he was doing. There is a reason teams do advanced medicals.
That's why AA is a MLB GM and we're all yokels on message board. Looks like some crow will be on the menu.

Feels like an overpay. But I thought the same about TDA, so I guess we shall see. I will be worried if the plan is to primarily use him as a starter

Yeah, sounds like all of you who were rooting for Clevinger to get injured got your wish.
Still think AA bitched out at the deadline. As it turned out, we would have probably won the World Series with one more quality starter.

It sounds like he was injured at the time he was dealt. Thus why his velo dropped the way it did. We weren't wishing him to get hurt, c'mon dude! But it was obvious by the precipitous drop in his velo that something was wrong and it was. There's a reason 29 other teams passed on him. SD should fire their entire medical staff for either ignoring or not even doing advanced medicals on him.
But keep moving those goalposts.

Padres have had tons of issues with medical disclosures and taking on damaged goods in their trades for pitching. Medical staff should be in hot water on both ends.

I don’t think anyone was wishing for injury but it’s logical to connect the dots on a pretty light return for the only playoff caliber starter on the market. When a team like the Yankees who was about as desperate for a starter as us doesn’t even get involved it is pretty telling.
This is all I wrote about it after his first start for Padres
Is this wishing for injury?

Clevinger wasn’t very sharp last night. Fewer swings and misses than any start he’s had in a couple years. Spin rates are way down even though velo was up. Have to wonder if there’s something going on mechanically that Cleveland recognized.

Charlie Morton is in agreement on a one-year, $15 million deal with Atlanta, sources tell ESPN. He's headed back to the team that drafted him in 2002 -- and gets the same money that Tampa Bay turned down when it declined its club option last months. @Feinsand had details first.

26 million on two pitchers... Guessing we think we had enough offense without Ozuna
Posted on 11/24/20 at 8:57 am to okietiger
Morton had velocity drop last season but is still a solid middle of the rotation arm. We can now focus on Ozuna and adding a bullpen arm or two.

I would have preferred we splash cash on a pitcher in their prime rather than hunting in the bargain bin and trying to squeeze the last ounce of baseball from guys on the way out.
That said, if one of these signings goes very well or both turn out decently, it's probably pretty good business and should help. I do wonder if we'll pay for a lack of continuity at some point, but perhaps it doesn't really matter.
Can't see us signing Ozuna and my instinct is to start fretting over the downgrade we'll probably get there. But I'm admittedly a bit wary to shite on the discount Ozuna AA is likely to bring in considering I said the same thing about Ozuna and Donaldson.

Morton has a 3.28 ERA in 61 October innings. He has pitched in multiple LCS's and WS. That's why he was brought here. And he is great w/younger guys also.
Great signing.
Great signing.

I think everyone knows why Morton was brought here.
None of that changes the risk of a 37 year old signing.
