8 years for Fried isn’t very smart. The market is insane this year. Will AA reset the tax? I wouldn’t want splurge on any remaining FA.

I don’t think you have anything to worry about concerning AA splurging on anyone, at all, ever.

Ehh, paying a pitcher through 39 isn't awful and the AAV is going to be cheap for much of that contract, payrolls are only going to grow.

Only if they played for the A's.

This is hilarious. Fried won’t get the free pass he had in Atlanta for no showing every October in New York.
Since 2018, Fried has had 20 post season starts with 2 wins, 5 losses, and an ERA north of 5.0. His only wins came in 2021.
Fried is simply not a dependable pitcher any more. The stats prove this. The Yankees spent over 200 million for a guy they have no idea how he’ll perform start to start or month to month. And he’ll really enjoy that short porch.

Eovaldi back to the Rangers for like 3 years/75 million

It's not even the AAV, which isn't that bad. It's the years.
8 years for a pitcher in his 30's? Good luck, Max.
He earned this contract, and congrats to him for cashing in.

Just my .02, but on last year’s “big” and “outside of the box” moves of Sale, López and Kelenic, AA seemingly hit on two out of the three.
While I think it would be crazy and outside the plan to sign a long term deal with Burns or similar, with every passing year the window closes a little bit more. The Mets have obviously made a huge move and a serious about competing. Philly is still there.
Maybe it’s time to go ahead and pay the monetary price on a shorter term, high AAV deal or two in order to fill the huge holes at SS and LF, and stabilize the rotation. Pay the money in the off-season rather than have to deal prospects for in season trades.
…..
Looks like Eovaldi, one of the potential rotation targets will resign with Texas. (Not totally related to the rest of my post, but throwing it in)

It was that time the second the final out was made in 2021... we were playing with house money at that point and had a great mix of vets, young players and the farm was about to graduate some dudes.
Instead, AA became obsessed with extending the playoff window by letting the vets walk and made big swings at bringing in younger guys that had high upside on long term deals.
He outsmarted himself and it has kind of backfired.

It's the years.
Again... there is nothing wrong with paying a pitcher in their late 30's.
You say this like 2/5ths of our rotation this past year weren't in their late 30's or 40's.

All of those guys were on much shorter deals. There was definitely uncertainty with Sale coming into the season, but if it had blown up in their face, it would have only hurt for 2 seasons. It's really hard to predict what a 31 year old pitcher is going to look like at 36.

It's really hard to predict any pitcher.
But, 8 years at that AAV is very easy to stomach for a 31 year old LHP.
It will be a bargain in 2030 if Max is anything close to still serviceable in the 6th year of his deal.

Backfired? How? We’ve been in the playoffs every year and our so called elite pitchers didn’t show up. How is that AA’s fault? He paid Fried and Sale millions to do nothing.
And what have the Mets or Phil’s accomplished in this same window? Nothing. The Mets signed Soto. Nice young player. But they’ll lose Alonso so what did they gain when they sign a pedestrian 1B.
The Braves have extended their window by not taking on albatross contracts. There is zero chance that Fried returns a huge profit over whoever the Braves slide into his slot.

What the frick are you babbling about?

Since 2022, the Phillies have made the NLCS twice, World Series once (beat us both times to reach that), and ended our NL East streak. The Mets have made the NLCS (beat us to clinch their playoff spot). If you don't think that our grip on the east has weakened considerably since the World Series, you're willfully ignorant. The most money/trade capital that AA has spent on outside players is Olson and Murphy to increase our dominance in the NL East and the NL... yes, it has definitely backfired.

I think his career in NY will go very similar as it did in ATL. He’ll have some seasons where he misses chunks of games and he’ll also have seasons where he’s healthy and finishes 2nd and 3rd in the Cy Young.
For a LHP, paying him less than 30m for still a good bulk of prime years left, it’s a great gamble to make

If it had been for 2 or 3 years, I'd agree.

No it doesn't. We essentially signed Morton to 4-year contract at age 37
Fried is 31 years old
He's got more prime years than non prime years in that deal.

People aren’t understanding these contracts. You don’t pay him all that $ because he’ll be good when he’s 40. You pay him to make sure he’s yours while the window is open.
