And in the postseason when every AB is high intensity and batters work more counts, it's harder to rely solely on location.
When you rely on weak contact and can't miss bats, sometimes that weak contact finds holes. It's why Smoltz was a better playoff pitcher than Maddux and Glavine.

But this is exactly why you can't rely on him in the postseason. Dudes without an overpowering fastball rely so heavily on location. When the location isn't there, you are royally fricked. Good thing we also have Bryce Elder and Tyler Mahle to fill in rotation spots if Perez finally turns into a pumpkin.

He built this team as if all he cares about is winning the division.
That's a fireable offense considering he was claiming that our championship window had just begun after 2021.

I will say that Mahle has missed more bats than I thought he would. His splitter is nasty.

Give it time, unfortunately. His career numbers are what they are for a reason.
Not many cases where a career mediocre pitcher struggles midseason and then suddenly becomes a frontline starter type with a change of scenery. There will inevitably be a regression to the mean.

Pretty incredible
Ron Karkovice just opened that handle of bourbon he's been saving for exactly this moment - HS Kim is his new favorite MLB player -

Jarvis is not good enough to take playing time away from Murphy like this. Murphy needs to be catching 4 times per week right now to try and get his bat going.
I think Walt has a soft spot for Jarvis because he sees a lot of himself in Jarvis.

What I see is that the Phillies are far from eliminated from the division title. There roster is so much better than Atlanta's and we can't even win a game when Sale starts a game lately. I am so disgusted with this team right now. I am watching other games up and down MLB. TV right now. I l have already given up even tonight even against the horseshite Minnesota Twins

Bailey Ober is awful and the Braves can't touch him

he is a right handed version of Martin Perez....can barely reach the plate

this game in MN tonight is gonna set the tone for this whole 7 game 4 stop swing - the black eye will be getting shut out on a Little League field by the Brewers - right before going home to play the dodgers -

You mean its a tough break that those have to be considered Atlanta's top 3 starters

Ironically the infamous Doyle Alexander for John Smoltz trade was an example.
Alexander, a mediocre journeyman, went on a tear in Detroit and carried that team to the postseason on his back. He went 9-0 in 11 starts, pitching 88 innings with a 1.50 ERA. They had a good veteran roster (Trammel, Whittaker, Gibson, Morris, Lemon) that was over 30 so they were in 'win now' mode.
Nobody ever remembers that when they make fun of that trade. I mean, still a horrible trade but it didn't seem so bad at the time.

Looks like everybody watching on pins and needles.........or they have given up and gone to bed. That's where I am headed after Ozzie's AB.
