For reference, he is going to get roughly double the AAV and years we gave Markakis and he is much more than twice the player he is.

And everyone thought Markakis was way overpaid. Point - Dale Murphy

My point is that if you don't consider Markakis to be overpaid at $11M AAV then no way you could say Heyward would be at $24M/yr.

I think it was a terrible signing. But it was also only for 4 years. When it's all said and done, whomever signs Heyward will be on the hook for at least a decade. I'm sure there will be some player options, but that's still a risk I'd rather the Braves not take.

Again, the backlash of having the opinion that JHey isn't ungodly is pretty astounding.

He'll be a free agent again in 3-4 years. It's not about what we think he was worth, it is about what he would get on the open market with teams bidding against each other.

I feel like I need to go apologize to my kids for being such a failure since I'd prefer my $20 million/year corner outfielder to hit at least 20 bombs on a consistent basis.

Well Yea it doesn't make sense for the braves. You're a ways away from being competitive his best years will be while youre building. But that doesn't mean it's a stupid contract for the handful of teams who are in their competitive window. That says nothing of considering how weak next year's fa class is along with the exponential growth of salaries throughout the league.

I've never argued that point, though I realize some have. It was my whole reason for being happy with the trade. I knew the Braves shouldn't/couldn't get into a bidding war because they'd be outmatched.

I was somewhat joking with my comment about the Nats offensive woes. But only because I know they'd be in on every other big free agent bat that's coming up in the near future. If it were a team that had the money for one player to really make a difference, I whole heartedly believe it would be a stupid contract.

I hope he goes to Washington for that much money.

Bethancourt dealt to the Padres for right handed pitcher Casey Kelly and catcher Ricardo Rodriguez.

Nice deal. Rodriguez has lots of potential after being one of the top international prospects in 2014. Only 17 years old.

I really love this front office now. The only two moves you can look at as head-scratchers under their watch in the last year is the Markakis signing and the Oliviera trade. I do think the Markakis signing had a lot to do with having a veteran in the clubhouse during this transition and the fact that I think he just wanted to come home.

Our farm system now...

Scouting report I read on Rodriguez didn't sound too promising, but he is very, very young obviously.
