Winner. Was a big bagwell, biggio fan. Wagner, dotel, Oswalt. Then the Bregman ensberg goatTran years. Around 2007 Comcast got the broadcast rights and you couldn't watch em anymore in LA. Blacked out on MLB.tv and no local carrying. By team other streams became available I'd moved on. Similar for many I assume.

I became an Astros fan because their games were carried by WGSO back in the 70's. My brother and I used to listen to them all the time.

Growing up in BR it was the same with WJBO. As a kid in that era, the Astros were right below LSU and the Saints as the hometown team. Just about all my friends made a summer trek to Astroworld and an Astros game.

I find it strange this is apparently no longer the case.

There’s a lot more Astros fans than Rangers fans in South Louisiana. Heck I don’t even know a Rangers fan while I know plenty of Astros fans.

I blame MLB's ridiculous blackout rules.
I don't know enough about south Louisiana to say what their MLB team should be, but I have to agree on this.

The blackout rules, "home TV area", and their interactions are mind numbing, and if you fall into that area where you're in a team's TV area but there is no TV broadcast available, then you're blacked out on MLB.tv.

That doesn't even get into that KXYZ or WQRF or whomever is the local carrier may not offer streaming.

MLB.tv works best when you get the single team package and then use a VPN where you can set the location outside your team's viewing area.

If MLB wants to grow, they have to look at how the TV rights are done going forward.

shocked no stations carry the cardinals in La, Alabama has 2 radio stations that do, kentucky about 12ish, tenn has some, illinois, nearly as many as cubs have, Oklahoma, etc

None in Texas either. We (and Louisiana too I think) can get KMOX on a clear night in the car, but that's about it.

I think the reach of the Astros flaghsip, KTRH 740 AM's signal helps us secure the Lake Charles fanbase.

MLB fandom is generational in Louisiana. Old timers like the Cardinals because they could hear the games on AM radio. People in the 80s like the Cubs because they could get them on TV and had guys like Ryne Sandberg. People in the 90s were Braves fans because they were good and broadcast on TBS. Recently there are a lot of Astros fans because Bregman, they were finally good again and you could watch them on FS1.

ETA: There are plenty of Astros fans in Southwest and South Louisiana and likely some Rangers fans in Shreveport area due to proximity. My post above is what I have seen and heard generally.

No they aren’t. South Louisiana grew up watching the Braves on TBS and to a lesser extent the Cubs on WGN

I love Bregman and the Astros but they will not retire his number in Houston lol. I’ll be rooting for Bregman in Boston though, especially when he plays the Yankees, and gets the opportunity to dominate them even more than he did in Houston.

But Astros for life here! I’ve been a fan ever since I came out the womb. I knew lots of Astro fans growing up in the BR area, before Bregman came along too.

Being that Houston is LSU west it makes sense. Yankees, Red Sox, and Dodger fans are all fare weather bandwagoners. Braves are in Atlanta and the last I saw Louisiana has a rival team over there. How can you root for a team that is in a city you hate? For instance I hate every Dallas team and mostly because of the Cowboys.

I guess my issue is that I almost exclusively only view fandom through a geographical lens. If you are a Louisiana native and you aren’t a saints fan i don’t take you serious.

MLB has really screwed the pooch here. Every Astros game should be available from Houston to Slidell. That should be the media market.

I guarantee there’s more Braves than Astros fans in the Baton Rouge and New Orleans areas. Can’t speak for SW Louisiana. The Braves just had too much time to get a foothold down here before the Astros started getting any considerable interest.

The Astros move from Fox Sports SW made getting the games harder. Couple that with the league move and the rebuild, and I can see why casuals fell off.

I’ve listened to them on radio since I was a kid, and my allegiance has always been strong. So even with Braves and Cubs on the superstations back in the day, I wasn’t switching.

Yes, you are correct that 1210 AM (I think) carried Cardinals games back in Musial days. I'm an old KLVI 560 Beaumont listener with Milo, and often have heard and read about the AM radio days.

But these guys are dead. And the Astros were only the Colt 45s in the 60s, so of course this is not going to provide a base.

Agree on the WGN and TBS and its influence in later decades.
