I don’t mean to nitpick, but American golfers have a great track record in true match play events. International competitions (Ryder Cup & Presidents Cup) aren’t match play until the final day.
Americans aren’t good at Fourball/Foursomes/Best Ball/Alternate Shot formats.

Alternate shot is such a contrived format…about as far from 72 hole stroke play as you can get. It’s just much easier for inferior players to win if they only have to hit half the shots against 1 ball. I’d like to see them do one of these Ike college golf and take the best 4 scores and keep a running total relative to par. It would probably just be too lopsided for the Americans but I’d like to see how it would shake out.

What happens when you pick a guy who grew up playing Wilshire Country Club over the walk on who played dog tracks in San Dimas and would have played his arse off in an event like this.

Americans are very good at match play. They win the singles almost every year in RC and president

They are good at individual match play it seems, but not team match play I guess.
I’m hoping they put Koivun and Gotterup together. Let the youth do some work.
