Could you imagine Hideki's mom looking at DJ's wife on social media

So an Asian that needed an interpreter won the Masters. I didn’t watch and obviously don’t know a lot about golf. Was is he a historically good golfer that finally won the big one or is he a relatively unknown that pulled off an upset?

I wouldn't call him either but he is closer to the former than the latter. He won't be historically good as in Nicklaus or Woods but he is far from a no name. He will probably end up around the Vijay Singh, Hale Irwin, Nick Price level with three majors to his credit give or take a major.

Hideki is a great player and the sky is the limit for him.

Multiple majors incoming IMO.

I give Hideki a lot of credit. After the Saturday rain delay, he was money. Xander just doesn't look like the same finisher he was even a few years ago. These 20 something golfers who have so much early success have sure struggled to maintain the same caliber of play. Rory McIlroy is almost where Jordan Speith just escaped from with his game. Rory has completely lost confidence in his driver. His driver is what he does best. Jordan is still having meltdowns at the oddest of times. Rickie Fowler is lost in space now and has joined his buddies in losing even the best things about their game. Why would Fowler ever lose confidence in his putter? Strange group crisis going on with these young guns.

He was trying to keep up with Bryson (for what, 6-7 extra yards?) and ruined his swing. He’s going to need a couple of months to sort it out.

Changed his swing to try and get over the hump. He was close, but one or two swings was costing him a tournament. Now that hump might as well be a mountain because his swing is lost.

Another one who was chasing distance and messed their swing up.

This false narrative needs to die.

In 2018 he was top 50 in SG off the tee and 124th in putting.

In 2019 these numbers flipped and now he admits he had a wrist injury.

While the Masters was anti-climactic this year, especially after the Xander triple on 16, I think it was won by a great player that will be one of the best of his generation of players when it is all said and done. Hideki has a VERY high ceiling and has been knocking on the door of majors for a long time. If he can keep his putter rolling well, he could have 3-4 majors when he's done.

He's also a class act and well-liked by his peers. He's not some flamboyant American personality and I understand some people thinking that is boring, but I kind of enjoyed the window into Japanese culture. Also he just prefers to not even speak English with the media, which I get. He speaks and understands pretty fluently off-camera.

The win was great for global golf and I'm happy for the guy.

Also - the caddie bowing to the course in respect as he put the pin back in at 18 gave me chills. That was just pure fricking awesome.

ETA:

I'll take Hideki over Willet, Immelman, or Fat Pat any damn day of the week.
