I don't think cutler > aikman, but have you ever stopped to consider that maybe the stat you have here is just because QBs today are just better?

QBs today use more screens and short passes in the place of halfback runs like Emmitt Smith's generation

I think this is absolutely true, regardless of the rule changes. The importance of the QB position has put more emphasis on developing elite QBs to further the evolution, too. Specialized positions in sports like QB, kicker, and punter in football along with goalie in hockey and soccer are receiving much better and earlier training.

The Aikman-Cutler comparison is pretty funny though.

Yes, everything is the GOAT now because you guys are watching it. If it happened before you were born, it was overrated

Uh...no.

These QBs are all in the Top 25 career passer ratings...

Kirk Cousins, Chad Pennington, Andy Dalton, Colin Kaepernick, Matt Schaub, Carson Palmer, Derrick Carr, Daunte Culpepper, Jeff Garcia...

These bums are ahead of Otto Graham!

Do I need to go on?

You can't compare eras...and certainly not to today's ridiculous era...which is why Brady or Manning arguments are stupid about greatest.

You can compare Brady and Manning against each other...just like you can compare Montana and Marino against each other...

But you can't compare eras...it's a joke.

Closest thing to 2017 Marino would be drew brees.

That 5k yard season for Marino would be 6k

Not at all. I'm not taking away from anything from former generations of players. Guys today just have advantages that those guys could not even dream of when it comes to training regiments, analytics, video breakdowns, and such. You really don't think that guys from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and even 90s would not have been even better with modern advantages? I'm not qualified to make judgments about GOAT or Top 5/10/etc All-Time lists. I do think it is common sense that the run of the mill QB should be better now than 20, 30, or 40 years ago due to the advantages the modern player has. That doesn't mean true elites can't transcend disadvantages to be as good or better than the best in successive eras.

As a Packer fan who thoroughly enjoyed Cutler's time in Chicago, there is a lot to be said for when you get your stats.

I think the avg qb today has much better skill sets than an avg qb from 25 years ago. With that said...Cutler doesn't belong in the same breath as a qb who won 3 championships.

Aikman was a great big game qb. The NFCCG wins over San Francisco were a testament to a qb who can play under pressure. The Bills SBs were afterthoughts at that point.

There are some stats that help you do that. Passer Rating Index is a pretty good start, which compares your rating to the league average. Aikman was above 100 (league average) 9 of his 12 years, and averaged 104.5 for his career. Cutler was above 100 8 of 12 years, with an average of 100.3, ergo, Aikman was better than Cutler. For reference, Joe Montana never had a year below 100, and averaged 122.5

To be fair, Aikman had one of the best offensive lines in football, absolute stud receivers, Emmitt Smith and stud TE at the time, etc....

Jay Cutler has had zero of those things

To understand what this era is all about...look at what the smartest man in football resorted to...

Dink and Dunk...to smurfs...as a running attack all the way down the field. Belichick and the Pats.

I think Walsh was the first proponent of the horizontal throw to the sidelines...the short pass...but nothing like we see today.

1/4 of todays passes are long hand-offs so stats are bullshite.

Cutler should thank his lucky stars he had a great arm.

Because mentally, he's one of the worst QBs of all-time.

I can't count how many games he's blown by being a douchebag not understanding the situation and the smart play. The man didn't understand his position. Big arm doesn't make a QB. Just ask Jay Schroeder, Cutler's brother in arms.

If they ever had a QB school, Cutler should have been the first enrolled.

So aikman threw more interceptions in a time when the league wasn't a "passing league", and that means he's better?
