Texas HS Football Playoffs Thread - State Championships

The Texas HS Football playoffs began last night.
For those wondering, Texas effectively has 11 classifications for the regular season (1A D1/2, 2A D1/2, 3A D1/2, 4A D1/2, 5A D1/2, 6A) and 12 for the playoffs. 6A splits into D1 and D2 playoff brackets. 32 districts in 6A, four teams make the playoffs from each district. Of those four teams, the two with the largest enrollment go D1, and the two smallest go D2. This means teams can go from one to the other in different years. For example, Austin Westlake won D2 two years ago, and won D1 last year. They are back in D2 this year.
6A Division 1 Bracket
The top classification is wide open this year. North Shore, Duncanville, Southlake Carroll, Atascocita, Allen, Rockwall, Arlington Martin, Spring Westfield and Lake Travis all have a shot.
6A Division 2 Bracket
Rockwall-Heath and Denton Guyer both have great teams, and in most years would be the favorites, but Katy and Westlake both went D2 this year, and Westlake is the heavy favorite to win their 3rd title in a row. Those are very likely the four semifinalist.
5A Division 1 Bracket
Denton Ryan, Highland Park and College Station are the favorites, and all in Region 2. Katy Paetow with a shot also.
5A Division 2 Bracket
Aledo is the favorite, but less so than in past years. This is also Aledo's last year in division 2.
4A Division 1 Bracket
Austin LBJ is the favorite
4A Division 2 Bracket
Carthage is the heavy favorite to win their 10th (i think) title.
3A Division 1 Bracket
3A Divistion 2 Bracket
2A Division 1 Bracket
2A Division 2 Bracket
1A Division 1 Bracket (Six Man)
1A Division 2 Bracket (Six Man)

Correct me if I am wrong on this, as I think I understand how this.
4 teams from every district goes into the playoffs. Divisions are set by enrollment not records. So the 3rd and 4th place teams can actually go into Division 1 and vice versa.
There are 2 state champions in every class.

I will be attending watching my Alma mater get hit by the Carthage buzzsaw in a few rounds.
I believe it would make it three out of four years that it has happened.

This is how it used to be. D1 and D2 are separated at the beginning now and districts are made for each division I believe.

Isn't Rockwall pretty good? I always hear that weirdo on Bally Sports hyping them up on Friday Nights.

Only 6A splits for the playoffs.. every other class is split for the regular season.. and yes, what place you finish doesnt matter as to which division you go to in 6A. For example:
1. Team A (7-0 in district) 2333 enrollment
2. Team B (6-1) 2788 enrollment
3. Team C (5-2) 4022 enrollment
4. Team D (4-3) 2480 enrollment
Team B is the Division 1, 1 seed from that district
Team C is the Division 1, 2 seed from that district
Team A is the Division 2, 1 seed from that district
Team D is the Division 2, 2 seed from that district
1. Team A (7-0 in district) 2333 enrollment
2. Team B (6-1) 2788 enrollment
3. Team C (5-2) 4022 enrollment
4. Team D (4-3) 2480 enrollment
Team B is the Division 1, 1 seed from that district
Team C is the Division 1, 2 seed from that district
Team A is the Division 2, 1 seed from that district
Team D is the Division 2, 2 seed from that district

How do they decide who’s in D1 or D2?

Yes. Thats where i live. They have wins over Cedar Hill and Lake Travis this year. Lost to Highland Park and Rockwall Heath (who has their best team ever this year).
Ohio St receiver Jaxon Smith-Ngigba is a Rockwall grad.
Rockwall QB Braedyn Locke (Miss St) moved up to number 2 on the all time 6A passing yard list last night in their round 1 win over North Garland. He also set the record for all time TD passes in 6A last night.

6A is explained above. For everything below 6A, the divisions are separate classifications based on enrollment.

Same thing with my alma mater. They get beat by West-Orange Stark every year. It's like a running joke (at least in 4A) that everybody's good until they matchup with the East Texas teams.
We'll see this year though, we have 2 D1 RBs so we actually have some firepower unlike usual years with a bunch of undersized white dudes.

The intriguing story for me is Austin LBJ. It’s not often you see an older inner-city school rise to this level after years of being dormant. UIL hosted its state band marching contest recently, and someone did a study about socioeconomic status of each school. They were overwhelmingly middle-upper class. Most of the great bands are also paired with excellent football teams (Cedar Park, Aledo, Highland Park, etc).
I find myself trying to pull for some of these smaller, albeit older, fish when they get to the playoffs. LBJ’s coach made a big stink last year when they blew a 3 TD lead in the semis. He wanted to pull the race card. I’m very conflicted.

*Second best
The 08 team was better and was cruising to a perfect season before 4A state player of the year Kendial Lawrence broke his collarbone in the playoffs.

I think in Class A (six-man) only two teams from each district go in.
Also in 6A the divisions aren't pre-set, like in the others. So it is possible (and in the past this has happened) for the D2 champ to have a larger enrollment than the D1 champ. The top 2 enrollments from the 4 district playoff teams go D1, the other two go D2. The other divisions are pre-set.

Rockwall isn't as strong as Rockwall-Heath but since Rockwall went D1 and Rockwall-Heath went D2 you could have both schools end up state champs.

Their problem may be whoever wins out of the bloodbath that is 4A D2 Region 2. Any one of six teams could take that region (Stephenville, Kennedale, Argyle, Melissa, Midlothian Heritage or Waco La Vega). That is if they don't get taken out by Corpus Christi Calallen.
