avg year for Tulo is 23 HR/83 RBI 364/504/869
Hanley 25HR /78 RBI .385/521/906
consider Tulo has a season factored in which he played 101 games and that is pretty impressive.
yeah, hanley steals bases, but Tulo plays GG defense.
I know, Tulo is good. But avg, OBP, slugging and OPS aren't affected by a guy only playing 101 games. I'm just saying Tulo's numbers haven't been identical to Hanley's over the past 3-4 years.

Here's a guy that's arguably been the 2nd best player in baseball since 2008, but isn't regarded as a superstar:
Joey Votto
Joey Votto

Not at the all-star break. He was not voted in by the fans (obviously Pujols will start), the managers, or even the players. He only replaced a player on the roster who was injured.

Okay.
He won the MVP last season. To anyone who follows baseball, he should be a superstar.

As mentioned, wasn't voted into the all star game.
Maybe you and I define superstar differently... or maybe I should have worded more clearly that he really is the 2nd best (contending for best) player in baseball and isn't recognized as that.

Another good example.
I got him as not a superstar as well.
Though it seems you and I's definitions of superstars are different than everyone else lol.

My point is that he was not recognized by the players or managers (who I can only hope follow baseball) as even an all-star, let alone a superstar. It was a sham that he was initially snubbed, but it took everyone way too long to realize his star power. Part of the problem is that MLB does not market their stars well. Tulo should be a household name, but he is not due to his lack of exposure and location (while he is obviously a superstar in terms of ability).

Yea, at the halfway mark of last season. If I was talking about the halfway mark of last season, sure.
But as of right now, he was the NL MVP last season. To me, he is a superstar caliber player.

dude no
2nd best player in baseball?
based on???>>>
25HR/84RBI back to back years in 08'/09' is not on an elite level

No question, but like I said, baseball does an awful job of marketing their stars. I think this is one of the biggest reasons of why the NBA is catching MLB in terms of popularity, and it projected to pass it around 2020.

Based on that he's not a recognizable player to the casual fan.
ETA: Nevermind, misread your post lol
You're basing too much on stats for this, IMO.
Like I said, Jeter is a bigger superstar than Tulo and Votto combined. THat's the idea.
Ripken in his later days would be another good example, like Jeter.

That's what you get when the entire marketing strategy for the MLB this season is centered around Brian Wilson's beard.

advanced metrics. from 2008-2011 he's second only to pujols in most categories. and he's maybe the best defensive 1B in baseball.

I made a list on page 2... it was about 6 people long, with 2 guys that are definitely fringe guys.

And the new motto is something "epic".
It is really is terrible how they choose to market, which is exclusively on nostalgia and now Brian Wilson. There are so many likeable stars out there to market, such as Brandon McCarthy.

so you base being the 2nd best player in baseball over the last 3 years on what, exactly?
superstardom?

i love Votto but no way he has been the 2nd best player in baseball the last 3 years.
Kevin Youkilis is a great sabermetric player too, doesnt mean he is a top 5 player over the last 3 years

Indeed.
Just my take. I know Votto doesn't have the length of production of some others (Pujols, Miggy, Hanley)... but he's trending towards the top of baseball.
eta: How would you define the best? and Who?
