a lot of that is rooted in personality though. Halladay's 2k11 commercial are a good example. Non descript, and in one of them he makes it about his catcher. There is no 'look at me' and that's by choice.

Cliff is same in that you really don't know or hear anything about him of field.

On the field, they're both about as superstar as you can be, but it ends there.

very true.

I've always tended to like the guys that were quiet but got the job done at a high level like your Lees, Halladays, Pudges (one of my all-time favorites for obvious reason), etc. etc.

But like I said, the marketable guys are great for the promotion of the game, jersey sales, and they get asses in seats.

yeah those are the guys that baseball fans usually love but that's also because they're exposed to them.

For people who go to one game a year or barely have a passing interest, they don't even register on their radar.

I'd maybe throw Ichiro into that superstar category as well but I'd have to really think about it.

Superstars imo:

Hamilton
Pujols
Lincecum
Jeter
ARod
Possibly: Halladay, Lee, Mauer

Good list. Sadly, Brian Wilson's beard is nearing an invite to that list, and I would consider Howard on the possibly list.

Another thing is that there a ton of superstar players talent wise, but not a household name, in smaller markets such as Tulo, Longoria, Hanley, Votto, etc.

What is really a shame is how there are considered so few superstars, in terms of being a household name, in comparison to other major sports. I blame MLB marketing for not having about 15-20 superstars in the league because there are enough great players to fit that bill.

ETA: I agree that Ichiro is a superstar.

His popularity has tapered quite a bit, though his production really hasn't all that much.

IMO JHam became a "superstar" after his ridiculous HR derby performance.

yeah but fans choose who and what is interesting to them.

Look at Braden last year. Probably got just as much attention for the 'get off my mound' stuff as he did his perfect game. Baseball fans are amazed by the perfect game, while casual viewers probably ate up the fight with ARod.

Speaking of unwritten rules. While you're here....

Some guy on here said the other day it was bush league to "time" your swing from the on deck circle. Thoughts? Also can we get your top 3 things a batter can do to get plunked by you?

I agree. He always had the comeback story going for him, but that cemented it. Last season didn't hurt either.

Exactly. Also, Braden's perfect game really made people think that he is way better than he is, no offense to him. For example, I remember ESPN recently had a poll about which A's starter is the best (I voted for you, FWIW). Cahill received like 28% of the vote and Braden was 26%-27%. I think that there is a pretty substantial gap between the two because I really like Cahill, and I even made an off-the-wall pick for him as my Cy Young. Braden, on the other hand, is a good middle to back of the rotation type guy, but he receives almost as much respect as an all-star and guy who just signed an extension just due to nine perfect innings.

To the common fan, Braden > Cahill or at least Braden = Cahill.

BB03, I have used that comparison as Gamecock a few times before, and I am sad that I am not getting recognition for it. The best example is probably the last one.
