Southern Miss was always seemed solid under Bowers
I like Bower, but I also think he hurt USM football a lot.
Bower never won more than 9 games in his 15+ years at USM, nor did he ever lose fewer than 3. Bower's record against power conference teams that finished with a winning record was something like 0-23.
The guy who followed him - Larry Fedora - went 12-2 in his fourth year and beat a Virginia team that would finish 8-5. It didn't take him long at all to totally separate himself from Bower. Fedora never had a losing season at USM (Bower's claim to fame), even though he basically threw away Bower's whole offensive scheme.
USM's mistake was that after Fedora left, a lot of very vocal fans and boosters got pissy about that fact and wanted aNoThEr JeFF bOwErS. So they twisted the right arms until we got Ellis Johnson (a crusty old timer who probably would have stuck around had he ever actually won a game), and USM's goose was permanently cooked.
And I do mean cooked. USM will never, ever do jack shite in football again.
Ultimately Bower is a bit of a villain to me, and embodies what went wrong at USM.

With Deshaun/Trevor as full time starters he's gone 67-5 (93%) with 2 national titles. In those 5 seasons his average final finishing position is 2.
Yes, but did recruit those players and coach them. That's the game. You can't remove those years from his record and legacy.

Dabo is operating in a league that is at a major financial disadvantage and doesn't have the financial firepower to land those mega stars that can make an immediate impact like Cam Ward will do.
Isn't Cam Ward playing for an ACC team?

Nebraska with Frank Solich
Posted on 9/4/24 at 6:16 pm to CU_Tigers4life
(Raises hand)…
Present.
Frank Solich had the unenviable task of maintaining the results and managing the expectations that had settled in after Tom Osborne’s final 5-6 year stretch run which was not only successful but almost dominantly so.
Frank started off at 9-4 (the horror), then went 12-1, 10-2, and 11-2.
Then we went 7-7 (a tragedy). Frank was put on notice by hot shot new athletic director Steve Pedersen, agreed to make some tough changes, parting ways with some long time assistants to the program, and while we weren’t going to be mistaken for a national title contender the following year, rebounded to 9-3 and a regular season ending win in Boulder against long time heated and hated conference rival Colorado.
Frank was unceremoniously dumped by the next day.
Frank probably wasn’t ever going to match the level of T.O.’s run to end the ‘90s but he was not a bad football coach. We would’ve had some continued continuity and stability and I think would’ve continued to have mostly winning seasons with maybe a run here or there on occasion when all the stars aligned right.
Instead, we’ve been mostly wandering the proverbial desert ever since. Had a few entertaining, winning seasons under Bo Pelini, never could win the biggest games though under him and Bo was dumped too. That’s pretty much been our apex the last 20+ years - the years under Pelini.
TLDR version - we fired a long time loyal and successful coach because he couldn’t win at the level we’d grown accustomed to and it’s pretty much sucked ever since.

The only thing that comes to mind is Frank Solich. Did a very good job at Nebraska and they fired him. It was a dramatic decline for Nebraska once they did that.

I remember where I was when the news that Frank Solich was fired, and I'm an Iowa fan. We sat around and watched press conference with the idiot AD talking about ceding the Big 12 to Texas. We all knew right then and there that Nebraska F'd up. It was glorious.
There was a time during the Tom Osbourne years where there was talk of parting ways with him because Tom "couldn't win the big one". They stuck with him and it paid off.
Devaney, Osbourne. Honestly, Iowa learned from Nebraska s mistake and has had Fry and Ferentz for over 40 years now, valuing stability and the sometimes down year for the upside big years.

Napier sucking doesn't mean that Mullen shouldn't have been fired. Both can be true.

I don't know if it gets talked about but in addition to firing Solich they decided to move away from their bread and butter to a more "modern" offense starting with Callahan.

Mullen had completely phoned it in at that point and basically given up even trying to recruit, but probably should have gotten one more year.
He is a great scheme guy but that ship had sailed.
I remember talking with a UF player when Bama came down to play Mullen in Gainesville and it sounded like they were a complete mess.
They played Bama into the 4th quarter that day, but that was a program on very shaky foundations across the board under Mullen.

I imagine that was probably a bit strange (and satisfying) for a Hawkeye backer in those days to see Nebraska setting itself up for a likely big fall.
You’re right, starting around the mid 70’s on throughout the 80s, Osborne himself wasn’t immune from the more opinionated and vocal armchair coaches within the fan base. First, he couldn’t beat Barry Switzer and “Sooner Magic”. After finally overcoming that hill, then he couldn’t keep up with Florida State or Miami in the Orange Bowl. Didn’t matter we were still reeling off 9, 10 and 11 win seasons consistently.
Fortunately we stuck with him and he stuck with us (because he probably could’ve easily gone elsewhere had he wanted) and the payoff was a run I’ll never forget.
Patience and staying the course is a dying virtue for sure.
