Dude who runs baseball-obsessed website Diamond Digest says on twitter that the Ohtani played in the 10 mlb games with the highest TV ratings this year.

I want to keep pointing out that Ohtani can in fact speak English
Notice I say doesn't, not can't.
Personally I don't care. Interviews are pretty ridiculous for the most part, I just like to see people have fun and make great plays. I'm just saying that if that's his point, it's not exactly terrible and/or racist.

And I bet that's because they were all just waiting for the postgame interview...once again, SAS is a dumbass

Smith chose neither of those paths. Instead, he decided to talk about why Ohtani being baseball’s top attraction is a bad thing because his first language isn’t English.
“I don’t think it helps that the number one face is a dude that needs an interpreter so you can understand what the hell he’s saying,” Smith said on First Take.
it is shocking he wasnt claiming racism that it wasnt a black man, thats his "go-to" shtick

ESPN does something racist. Gee, what a surprise.

I’ve supported @stephenasmith when he’s been big at @espn and when he hasn’t, and when he’s been right and when he’s been wrong.
But this, about Shohei Ohtani, is straight up racism at a time of dangerous anti-Asian violence.
This requires an apology, and a suspension. Now.

Is First Take shown live or did they just forget to edit out the stupid stuff today ?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in my life is that so much of the world goes to great lengths to cater to English speakers. We should be able to handle a baseball player who uses an interpreter.
Man, thank God I know what Keith Olbermann and Dan Wolken think on the subject.

Seems telling of something that on First Take today Stephen A. Smith both said that Shohei Ohtani can’t be the face of baseball because he uses a translator and also butchered the names of Nigerian basketball players by way of criticizing Team USA for losing to them.
Interesting to see some ESPNers, some more directly than others, condemn these comments, especially the Ohtani one. ESPNers frequently disagree with First Take, but usually not publicly.

Right, because what my kid’s concerned about when he turns on a baseball game- SPECIFICALLY TO SEE WHAT SHOHEI OHTANI DOES- is “what is will Ohtani say after the game and will I understand him?”
He also has these concerns about Messi in soccer. ??

You know what “helps” #MLB? A “dude” who is a bonafide power hitter, who also has an absurd fastball and nasty curve, and who is unlike ANY other player any of us have seen. You know what helped create the beautiful fabric of this country? Immigrants. #StopAsianHate
These takes are more idiotic than SAS. Messi? he doesn't even play in an English speaking country.
SAS somewhat has a point but it goes beyond Ohtani. MLB is terrible at marketing any players. Trout has been the best player in baseball for a while now and I can honestly say I've never heard the guy speak.

International players do seem to hide behind interpreters. I'm sure that is frustrating for reporters. They can speak to their teammates fine. But not to the press..
This is such a dumb take for someone who probably has no idea how difficult it is to learn a second language well enough to speak it to a press corps that has routinely twisted words to fit a narrative when talking to native speakers.

This should have come up long ago. Many an MLB MVP is coming from the Hispanic and Latino culture and has for decades and many use an interpreter. There are more Spanish in the game of MLB than African Americans.
Why save the indignation for this Japanese kid?
From my understanding the argument is about bringing in casual fans and increasing ratings. Things like social media are a big influence on these things. Hes a good looking guy and plays in a big market and still doesnt have 1 million IG followers. If you asked me blindly without doing research I would think speaking english would help, but that obviously isnt the case once you do some research into current american stars like Mike Trout.

I don’t like Ohtani because he’s Asian and Trump made me hate Asians.
I want to beat them.

Ichiro was pretty fricking popular here in his prime and he wasn’t the talent Ohtani is
Posted on 7/12/21 at 2:35 pm to ShaneTheLegLechler
There's a difference between pretty popular and THE BEST PLAYER IN BASEBALL.
I think that was the point. Its not ideal when the best player in your game does not speak the language.
That's it. Totally blown out of proportion.

If someone think he's wrong that's fine. But its a completely benign point really. But of course everyone has to display their virtual signals.
