Stealing signs? Bush league or part of the game?

The recent "altercation" between Bumgarner and Heyward got me thinking about this.
And on a side note, Heyward knew what was coming and still whiffed.
Have fun Cubs fans.

I think that picking up on tendencies is a part of the game. I think that if someone is careless enough to show you what they are doing and you take advantage? No problem at all. However, if you start trying to sneak looks in and find other "outside your normal" ways then that is bush.

Part of the game
So is getting hit when the pitcher finds out.

It depends who is stealing them and who they are being stolen from. Obviously in the big leagues the catchers call the game, so the signs would have to be stolen from him. If it is a runner on second that is stealing them then I say it is part of the game.
However, if it is somebody in center field with binoculars (looking at you Blue Jays), then it is bush league.

I think if you steal them through the naked eye via a coach or player in the dugout, it's fair game. To have a lip reader with binoculars in a suite watching every word being said in the opposing dugout, illegal and should warrant sanctions.

Paul Harbor used to be our designated sign stealer back in the day.

I have no problems with it...
much like I have no problems with "chin" music, although it is stupid
I also don't have a problem with bat flips or eccentric dances after a big strike out

I agree - I am very much a baseball libertarian. Do your thing, don't complain when someone else reacts to "your thing" by doing "their thing" (within the bounds of safety).
However, like was posted above, having people using outside devices while hiding someone to steal signs is outside the "spirit of the game" limits for me.

Sitting in the dugout stealing signs turned into the only part of baseball I enjoyed.

pretty much this. baseball coaches try to disguise their signals for a reason. if the other team figures them out through normal means, then that's just part of the game. But yeah, if you have someone in center field lip reading and using binoculars, then that's very bush league.

If you're taking a lead at second holding up two fingers, the guy at the plate is getting drilled. If you're at second and adjust your batting helmet when you pick up curve, fair game. If the other dugout is stealing coaches' signs, they're too simple.

Are you trying to clown me for being an 8th grader sitting on the bench for varsity?

A catcher can reasonably be expected to hide or disguise signs from a guy standing directly in his line of sight 130 feet away. Not so much for a guy sitting 430 feet away with binoculars.

Everyone knows that classy organizations don't do any of this. The classiest organizations simply hire front office personnel from other teams and log into their old teams' databases.
