I’m not sure what you mean by 8S program? OCS never had a separate grade for players that got held back.
Depends on what you call never. There were several schools in North La and across the state who had special classes where students would take an additional year to make it through middle school before the LHSAA cracked down on it around 2000-2001.

I know for a fact that the two schools that used it the most (one of which you called out) have not done so for almost 20 years.

If you are referring to OCS, they may not have an 8s program but they certainly encourage holding back. You mention the 8th grade class below. The two best players have been 15 for a good bit of the school year.

It was called 8 Plus. There are people that post here that were part of the program.

One of my old high school coaches attended OCS and told me about this program he participated in during the late 90’s.

Oh my bad. I assumed yall were discussing something relevant to the present.

I can't comment on what happened 30+ years ago. But within the last 15 years or so I can say pretty confidently say they don't have an extra grade for people that got held back.

Yeah if any players did get held back it was most likely done way sooner. They will mention it to parents around 1st grade or 5th grade depending on how long the child has been there. Also it's usually not presented with anything dealing with sports. More so the current size of the child or where their birthday falls.

Correct. They had to stop in the early 2000’s because the LHSAA cracked down on schools doing it like the poster mentioned above. Now they do it before junior high.

All of our guys except one in my graduating class were 17 and 18. We had one 19 year old. I graduated within the last ten years.

I always assumed St. Frederick and Loyola in Shreveport were similar. Both attract similar students from similar demographics in North Louisiana.

If someone actually chooses either primarily to play sports, it’s probably because he can actually play and be a significant contributor, instead of simply being lost in the wash at a bigger or more dominant school. Those types might develop into a really good player, but they aren’t coveted D1 prospects.

The overwhelming majority of students and athletes attend the school because it’s a private Catholic school. Both schools want to win, but their primary focus isn't centered around athletic success. They make do with what they have.

Because the LHSAA outlawed it. They made you holdback before 6th grade or lose eligibility.

They just ended this rule btw...

Basically this. Demographically we are the same. I always joked that the bishop liked Loyola better though!

We had plenty of Protestants, but there just aren’t many Catholics in North La. It seems like the majority of people attended because they wanted to send their kid to a private school, but we also had plenty of the big traditional Catholic families.

The last coach did a really good job at SFHS. Going forward, the bar needs to be much lower.

Sterlington, and to some extent, Neville are depleting the private schools in the area of good talent…and Ouachita.

Actually, I see Sterlington as the dominate football program in NELA over the next decade - the growth from Monroe and Bastrop to that area is insane.

NELA football in general is suffering - unless you farm, you are moving the hell out of there to Texas. There is no business or industry left.

Finally, I feel bad for the kids left on the SF roster - they will get murdered next year if everyone keeps transferring out of the school.

NELA football is doing just fine. They won 4 of the 9 state championships this past year. Also Amazon is coming to Monroe soon.

St. Fredericks football program is in a better state as is compared to when I was there mid-late 00s but we were also in 2A then. If he can improve on that then he will be just fine. Job pressure is fairly low

With the Stokes family leaving OCS, there may be some transfers out of OCS, but it would be sacrilege for those families to choose St. Fred's. Most would just go to Sterlington. St. Fred's is essentially a dead school walking, especially with all the transfers out to Neville and Ouachita from their 8th grade group.
