New Year's Day used to be all about the 4 or 5 great bowl games on TV. Several of which usually meant something or at least a big deal.

The BCS and now playoffs ruined that.

I think sports in general is the worse off for all of these reasons, too. Everything today as hyped to the hilt. It has created the boy who cried wolf syndrome amongst sports fans. It mirrors the cynical nature of society in general now. People have become so jaded about everything.

And TV greed...by dragging the bowl games out after New Years Day (BCS and playoffs) -

Look at this TV line-up in 1979 on New Years Day..

Cotton: Notre Dame vs. Houston
Orange: Oklahoma vs. Nebraska
Rose: USC vs. Michigan
Sugar: Alabama vs. Penn State

And they staggered them so you saw all 4 games in a row and two of those games mean't everything.

Is it not? It probably won't happen this year, and home runs are way up.

Bowl games have lost their luster.

Bowl games have always been largely meaningless exhibitions, with maybe one or two that had any real meaning. This is a classic example of memory gilding something that was pretty ordinary at te time.
