Sports Illustrated - NFL v CFB debate

Why the NFL is better
Why CFB is better
I figure the MSB will enjoy this
quote:
I realize many fans watch football mainly for that glitzy presentation. They love the pageantry of football. The tradition. The sense of community. Most people say that in this regard, college beats pro. To those people, I say: you’re right. In fact, it’s really not that close. But there are those of us who like football’s pageantry but love its strategy. We see the game as a chess match, only where everyone’s pieces are not the same, those pieces are not confined to individual squares, they move not one at a time but all at once, and that movement usually doesn’t stop until someone scores or gets hit.
From a strategic entertainment standpoint, pro football annihilates college football.
Why CFB is better
quote:
it occurred to me that I don’t want strategic entertainment. I want entertaining entertainment. That’s what college football provides. To use Andy’s own words, it is “loose and sloppy.” To put it in terms Andy and his analytical ilk will appreciate, those are features—not bugs. (Benoit also compared college football to “a fourth-grader’s handwritten notebook.” Great line, but there sure seem to be a lot of NFL coaches leafing through said notebook to borrow schematic innovations.)

NFL blows. CFB and it ain’t close

both good points. Different people like different things. I like cfb better mainly because of the atmosphere of games, as well as how important every game is. In the nfl an 8-8 team still had a shot. You lose 2 games, maybe even 1 game and you are done

Give me CFB 7 days a week over the NFL

Give me NFL. Fantasy football, FanDuel. These keep NFL at the top for me

I enjoy both. CfB is awesome because of the emotion and passion. It can be electric.
NFL is a significantly better pure football product and enjoyable for the excellence, precision, and complexity. I prefer the NFL by a very large margin, but nothing is incorrect.
Football is great.

If the NFL went away tomorrow, my primary concern would be how it would affect Bama’s recruiting. My second concern would be fantasy football. It would change my life very little.
If college football went away, I’m sure that I would find something else eventually.

Cfb is better due to tv, you can watch all the big games. I live in ohio and my sundays are browns, Bengals, and lions games....complete arse cakes

I've never understood this argument. NFL teams pretty much run variations of the same formations and packages. CFB has so much more variety, each game requires a different strategy and approach which is way more entertaining

I find cfb more interesting and passionate.
Still love the nfl but it’s lost some luster over the last 10–15 years.

NFL is a poor product, and should be called the:
Mediocre
Football
League

League

i'm passionate about college football. nfl just barely gives me a fix on sundays. primarily because of the sport and not the league.

I've always preferred cfb over the NFL but loved both...
As I've aged my interest in the NFL is basically gone and cfb while strong doesn't match what it did at one time

Both products have their pros and cons.
In the end, CFB has the opportunity to be much more entertaining when it comes to the actual product due to the variety in game plans.
However, where CFB falls way behind the NFL is the determination of a "champion". CFB is centered around several top teams and that's it. Those teams will always be in the running no matter what, and have different standards for accomplishing the end goal.
NFL for years was this way until they implemented the cap. Now every team has a shot, and every team has the same standards to meet when it comes to winning the championship.
Not to mention fantasy football.
So, NFL gets the edge, IMO.

For now it does. But if some people get their wish of a 16-team playoff then every game won’t matter as much.

One plus for the NFL is typically the games are still in doubt into the 4th quarter.
Many college games are not.
However, I'd rate it like this:
1. Close, exiting college games
2. Close, exiting NFL games
3. Blowout college games
4. Paint drying
5. Blowout NFL games

And they will run the same shite for decades before circumstance eventually forces them to change.
For example, many NFL coaches that whine about how college isn't producing the type of quarterback they "need" anymore.
Well... tough luck, buttercup. fricking ADAPT.

I agree. Anyone who says the NFL is better because of the “chess match” and strategies is talking out of their arse. The same precise game planning and adjustments exist in the college game. The NFL can be considered a better game due to better execution, better players, etc but that’s a different argument. The biggest strategic difference from college to pro is probably pass protection scheme and I guarantee some random sports illustrated writer is not seeing this by leisurely watching NFL games on Sundays.
