Its never moved the needle for me when i see that CU is on TV, other than the mid 90s.

I love the state as much as the next guy, and Boulder is a cool town, but when ive been there i never get the feel that its a huge college football market.

Stadium only seats 50k, you have to fly everywhere to recruit players, and since you left the Big 12 you left your main recruiting base with it.

I just dont ever see a big name going there and IMO it will always be a stepping stone job.

Once you get recruits on campus it’s a different story

No.

They have an admin that is antagonistic to athletics.

They have a culture that de-emphasizes athletics.

They self impose recruiting restrictions that will stop them from getting players out of state.

There aren't enough players in state to sustain a program.

There was a time not to long ago that it was a plumb job and had top tier coaches. McCartney, Barnett and Neuheisel coached there and did well and they could recruit wit the best of them. shite two of LSU's last three coaches had their starts there. Miles and DiNardo.....both on Bill McCartney's staff in the late 1980's as he was building up the place

Compete for NCs? Doubtful.

A damn good program? Sure, why not? The place sells itself.

No, maybe top half of the Pac12 which has been the worst P5 by a large margin this year.

I think it certainly can be. Some of the people, like a lot of fanbases, have unrealistic expectations. But in the past couple years we have seen the Pac-12 power shift away from teams like USC and Oregon, and over to teams like Washington State and Washington. I dont see any reason why the right coach couldn’t win there.

Boulder is a beautiful town, and Folsom is a smaller stadium, its a beautiful place to play. Mac had a little success there, with one really good season. I think a coach could come in there and have sustained success.

They have put some money into the program lately. That said, there's no natural recruiting base, the administration is so so on commitment and they care about academics.

It's like a lower level Nebraska and probably even worse than Utah, which is a comparable situation in the Pac. CU is clearly in the lower half of the Pac.

It is a 2.5 hour flight to LA from Denver. They aren't taking a wagon. One of the most popular areas in the world. Great education. Highly wealthy state. Great uniforms and tradition. Has won a title more recent than most SEC schools not named Bama, AU, UF, and LSU. So yeah, it has some advantages.

I think its an okay job but even if you get it to where a coach could compete year in and year out for Pac-12 titles it would still always be a Tier 2 job, where any coach would still look to jump to a more proven power from this millenium.

As others have said CO is both good and bad for recruiting, I think a coach there would be wise to use the KS JUCOs every year to supplement its roster as well. Even though people on this board will probably think it would be a terrible call I think McElwain who is the WRs coach at Michigan might not be a bad option if you want a coach that would try and tear it down and rebuild and would be relatively cheap.

put yourself in the spot of the Troy, UAB, Utah St, UNT coach. Do you leave your current school for CU or do you hold out for a top 15-20 job?

You know what else is a 2 1/2 hour flight? Birmingham to NYC direct

When you think about the majority of kids being recruited, I doubt they nor their families can afford flights to Denver and back very often. And they sure don’t want to be 14 hours away by car.

I think it’s a much more difficult sell than you think

Although they have upgraded them somewhat recently, their facilities are very sub par compared to the big boys. This has been a recruiting point their rivals use against them consistently when battling for a recruit.

Nature abhors a vacuum. In the late 1980's LSU sort of abandoned the New Orleans area from a recruiting standpoint and it left the area open for poaching by teams from the Big (8) 12 like CU, Neb, KSU as well as FSU and Miami. Mike Archer wanted to concentrate on NW LA, ETX and FLA as a result he ignored guys like Mickey Joseph who went to Nebraska ( they ran the option)Then Vance Joseph at Shaw in NOLA went to Colorado. Mike Smith at Jesuit went to KSU. Shawn Jackson at St. Aug went to FSU and Pat Riley from Shaw went to Miami....just to mention a few. Few of them went to LSU or were even heavily recruited by LSU at the time. There were others as well and then McCartney landed Kordell Stewart in 1992. NOLA was where they were getting the players and this kept up until Gerry DiNardo became HC at LSU

Boulder is a great place to live, but those guys are working 18 hour days anyways so not like you really enjoy it. Everything else is negative.

They haven’t found their footing in California like they did in Texas while they were in the big 12.

They have a growing population, great campus, and good school. It’s not the worst jump in the world.

They have to have a guy that can recruit California and that is creative schemer to make up for their shortcomings.
