Gonzaga's athletic director met in person with the Big 12 commissioner last week as part of broader discussions about the Zags joining the Big 12, sources told ESPN. The discussions are part of the possibility of a seismic move of the basketball powerhouse leaving the West Coast Conference to a power conference.

The addition of Gonzaga to the Big 12 would be a massive shift in the landscape, as it would perpetuate the Big 12's reputation atop the sport. Gonzaga's men's basketball program has played in the national title game in 2017 and 2021. Gonzaga has been a No. 1 seen in the NCAA tournament in four of the past five years.

Yormark has been open about the league's desire to expand. He's spoken openly about adding a fourth time zone and programs with national cache. The Big 12 and its television partners, ESPN and Fox, are near agreement on a six-year extension that includes a significant pay raise. How any potential payout would trickle down to a school without football is uncertain, but the idea of Gonzaga playing Kansas, Baylor, BYU and Texas Tech in league play would be attractive to television partners.

Really hilarious to me that Gonzaga, who doesn't have a football team, is in discussion with the Big12 and Memphis continues not to draw any interest despite the Big 12 losing now 4 programs to the SEC, 1 to the Pac12, and another to the Big10.

Hmmm? This sounds like strike while the iron is hot...type of deal for the Zags.

A small commuter school with no real campus that doesn't play football. But the Big12 is like hey! They're hot in basketball right now.

If the Zags start to stink in basketball is there a divorce clause?

The Big 12 wouldn't have to share football revenue with Gonzaga, but it would with Memphis. Obviously the Big 12 doesn't think Memphis' football program is worth enough to justify dividing the football pie up any further.

Real knee slapper. We should have just dropped football after Tommy West and just tried to make it work with the Big East. I hate this shite.

Yep, I could see Gonzaga hoops going to the toilet especially with NIL in play.

Gonzaga doesn't have a football team so would the Big 12 be interested in a basketball-only school, even one as prominent as them?

Say goodbye to consistent #1 seeds in the tournament if this happens.

We would be:
A) Adding a Basketball Team
B) Adding a really bad Football Team (if they were to get one)

We are clearly trying to keep Kansas in the conference.

Women’s basketball too.

Their football program is also undefeated since World War II and at one time not too long ago had as many or more pro football hall of famers than the University of Washington.

They get $. They’re the de facto pro sports team for Spokane, the largest market between Seattle and Minneapolis. I live 300 miles away and saw car commercials with Drew Timme last year on the regional sports network.
