Sonny Cumbie stopped Louisiana Tech's practice to berate a reporter in front of the team

Listening to 97.7 in Ruston yesterday and they kept referencing an incident that happened earlier in the morning. Did some asking around and my goodness I couldn't hardly believe the story.
Please remember that Louisiana Tech is 6-16 since Cumbie took over, lost by over 25 on Saturday to Liberty where Liberty punted once and you have up over 600 yards of offense. This coming Saturday they are merely 7 point favorites against a Sam Houston State team who has one win (over an FCS team) this season. And this is where the focus is?
Ben Carlisle runs the Tech Rivals site and is basically Louisiana Tech's only full-time reporter. Matt Belinson is the only other. Apparently Carlisle was out at practice to give a practice report yesterday. Sonny Cumbie stopped practice, gathered the offense called Carlisle over and asked him to explain what he does to them. During the explanation Cumbie scolds him to look the players in the eyes. Once the explanation finishes Cumbie proceeds to say he isn't supportive enough of the team and is no longer welcome at practice. Coaches apparently knew this was coming and it was intentionally done to belittle and humiliate him in front of the team.
Now my thoughts:
The program is in a bad place. The fans are ready to run Cumbie out of town and are very vocal on the post game show. If Cumbie had a problem with the coverage there are plenty of professional ways to address this. Overall it shows just how far in over his head Cumbie is. I don't envy Eric Wood's job right now. He can't afford to keep this knucklehead around, but he also literally can't afford to run him out of town.

I know nothing about this situation, but the coach sounds like an unprofessional little bitch.

Always looked like a prick to me.

This era can’t come to an end soon enough. I’ve never seen the fan apathy and disinterest that I do now. Need a tear down and rebuild, if that’s even possible. I know it got rough the last few years under skip but this is new level.

Part of me thinks Cumbie knows he can't win here and is trying to get himself canned. We would be on the hook for his buyout and he can go get an analyst job back in Texas.
Go ahead and hit the reset button on the career now and get dual incomes for the next three years while you work your way back up.

La Tech needs to find the hottest intern possible to go remedy Cumbie’s buyout situation

If he keeps berating reporters, they'll find something.

I’m a Tech graduate who grew up there & who has been one of the biggest Bulldogs athletic supporters for all of my life. I’ve never seen things this bad. It’s going to be interesting to see what goes down in the offseason

This guy does not look like a football coach

He looks like he would jerk off on the phone to a campus sexual assault advocate without her consent.

That'll get the media on your side.

I'm not sticking up for Cumbie here because what he reportedly did was still chickenshit, but was there something specific written by Carlisle that set him off?

Cumbie seems to have a fundamental misunderstanding of what reporters do (or are supposed to do, more accately).

I think Leslie G. could throw something seductive on...

Don't think anything in particular. I can tell you the postgame call-in show is just people screaming for him to be fired

If I had to point to a specific issue it would probably be the quarterback situation that Cumbie has mishandled in consecutive seasons. Cumbie chose to play walk-on Jack Turner (Who didn't start in HS or JuCo) over Boise State transfer Hank Bachmeier. But once again, I personally haven't heard any comments that crossed the lines and I dont think he ever said anything that wasn't in-line with whatever just about every Tech fan was thinking.
Everyone in Ruston knew Hank Bachmeier should have started over Jack Turner, except Sonny Cumbie. Hank is starting again after Turner was so terrible he left Sonny no choice. Since then Hank was been extremely impressive and fans are pointing and saying "What in the hell were you thinking" and maybe that is what set him off?
I don't know. Everything about Sonny Cumbie is mind boggling. He ran Landry Lyddy off last season. He wouldn't bench Matthew Downing last year until Downing tore his ACL. (Statistically, Downing was the worst quarterback in college football last season). At least three times this year he has called a timeout late in the half to try and "Get the ball back" and all three times it has resulted in conserving time for the opponent and score before the half. At least a couple of times a game the team trots onto the field after a stoppage in play and either get or nearly get a delay of game trying to get the play in. His playing calling doesn't adjust to the situation (We ran the ball down 7 with under a minute and no timeouts left in opposing territory).
He just doesn't seem to have a clue what he is doing and I don't think he can handle the minuscule heat being brought by the 75 people still paying attention to Louisiana Tech football.

Can y'all send those 75 people down to Lafayette for the game against Southern Miss tomorrow night?

Carlise also is the host of the postgame show following all football games and of BleedTechBlue Radio. Cumbie likely is butthurt over Carlisle and callers/texters criticizing some coaching blunders that continue on an every game basis (timeout strategy, play calling, too many/not enough men on field, etc). He’s also questioned Cumbie and staff’s ability to evaluate and recruit talent. Cumbie started a QB for at least 3 games this year who didn’t start in high school or junior college over a 67% winning percentage FBS QB from Boise St. It likely cost us 2-3 wins. Staff is unexplainably playing less talented and athletic skill players. Staff hasn’t shown ability to recruit players from high school or portal who are difference makers. Cumbie has continued to blame losses on failure to execute, but Carlise like many fans is tired to the same excuses and looking for results. Cumbie’s 6-22 and only won 1 out of 8 1-score games. It’s clear the pressure on Cumbie is getting high, and he’s so desperate to generate enthusiasm within the program, which will miss a bowl for the 3rd straight year, that he chose to publicly humiliate the largest source of Louisiana Tech sports information. He will rue that decision.
