Here are the numbers of the contract Messi signed back in 2017, via Italian reporter Fabrizio Romano: €555,237,619 over four years, with an annual salary of €138 million including variables, a €115 million “renewal fee” and a €77 million loyalty bonus.

Those numbers translate out to $674 million for the entire contract, $167 million per year, $139 million renewal fee and a $94.6 million loyalty bonus in 2020 dollars.

Compare that to Mahomes’ 10-year, $503 million deal (in reality a $450 million due to some creative accounting) or Mike Trout’s 12-year, $420 million contract, and you’ll see that the highest reaches of European soccer blow away American sports salaries. Messi’s contract is higher than the highest reaches of the biggest contract on record, and it’s only over the course of four years. The total money over the course of the contract comes out to about $320.55 per minute.

In fact, Messi’s $167 million annual income is higher than the combined salaries of Trout, LeBron James, Tom Brady and Connor McDavid this year, according to Spotrac’s numbers for yearly cash.

What’s his agent’s cut and how much does he pay in taxes? All that salary means frick all of he only takes home 20% of it.

His agent is his dad so it stays in the family.

Spain’s tax laws are pretty gay

It’s like a right of passage for elite players there to get tried for tax evasion

Especially non-Spaniards. They tax expats at an even higher rate than citizens.

The taxes in Spain are most likely insane. I doubt he takes home a lot of that.

Same for Renaldo in Italy.

That only leaves him with $540MM. I hope he’s approved by Spain’s version of EBT.

He said "keep only 20%" which is ONLY $134.8m.

Though I'd be pissed if that was my take home from my gross.

Top marginals approach 50% in Europe so he probably loses at least a 1/3 to taxes.

Oh, I misread, my bad. In that case, he needs a 2nd job too.

ETA: And 80% is fricking ridiculous. I can see why they’re all charged with tax evasion. I would be too.

It makes sense. North America has 5 major sports that have the top leagues in the world, MLB, NFL, PGA, NHL, and NBA. Add in the MLS, X Games, and other sports and the North American sports entertainment dollar is very divided.

In Europe there is soccer and only soccer as the #1 sport. Everything else is the minor leagues. Soccer is also a global sport. Not surprised that the top soccer players in the world playing in the Euro leagues make 4-5x what our top athletes do. There is no splitting the pie over there.

Actually Messi was supposed to be sentenced for tax evasion but they reduced it to a fine.
