Marlins ace Jose Fernandez was piloting his boat when the vessel crashed Sept. 25 off Miami Beach, killing Fernandez and two passengers, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said in a report released Thursday morning.

Toxicology reports released in October concluded Fernandez, 24, had consumed alcohol and cocaine shortly before the crash. Fernandez’s blood-alcohol level was .147, well above the .08 marker for impaired driving, the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner said.

Does your opinion of him change? I think great ballplayer, but no different than a drunk driver killing someone, hard to glorify him at this point

Coke is like PEDs for driving boats.

no one is glorifying anything...you can still mourn someone that dies even if they were completely at fault

Idiot.

Idiot? Why? The guy was high on cocaine and drunk and he was operating a boat and killed 2 of his friends. Would you "honor" a drunk driver who kills 2 other people just bc he could throw a baseball well?

How did they figure out he was driving the boat?

He was also going ~65mph. That is hauling serious arse in a boat.

No. Great ballplayer and from most accounts a really great guy. Anyone could make a tragic error in judgment. Being young and rich in Miami makes it even more likely. I don't excuse our condone it, but it isn't hard to see how it could happen. He is responsible for 3 deaths and that is a tragedy.

Investigators found Fernandez’s DNA on the steering wheel and the throttle of Kaught Looking, his 32-foot SeaVee, which struck a jetty at the southern tip of Miami Beach just after 3 a.m. that morning. Fernandez’ body also lurched forward upon impact, with his legs hitting the center console, according to the FWC report.

He has blood on his hands and his poor choices have led to widespread devastation of several families. But MLB will b make him out as a victim.

Gotcha. I was wondering how they figured that out.

Depends on who the person was. Great people can make really bad decisions. Sometimes those decisions become tragic. For people that understand no single event defines the entirety of a person, they can still honor the life of someone that fricked up.

It's on those guys for riding with him, too. I never drink and drive, but I have let drunks drive me a million times. That's on me if I die with my friends mario karting me around.

Dude was 24 living in Miami and did what anyone his age would do. He shouldn't have been driving the boat but being out in a boat that late at night also probably had to do with the wreck. He played baseball like he was still a kid and you can tell he loved baseball. I will always remember the baseball player and not the guy that was drunk while on cocaine.

It is, but at the same time you have a distraught friend who is drunk and high, are you gonna let him hit the ocean in his speedboat at night? If anything his friends were good friends but they shouldn't have let him get behind the wheel with whatever clearly had him so pissed off, i think they said a fight with his girlfriend.

Some of you are so dense and simple minded, it's hard to see how you function as adults. Not everything is binary, black and white. You can recognize he is at fault and made a terrible decision that cost people their lives, while still recognizing the tragedy that is a talented young man with the world at his fingers dying. It doesn't have to be an either/or between mourning the loss and condemning the wreckless behavior.

But he was an up and coming player so it's okay.

I wonder how many of his teammates ignored his cocaine addiction when knees of his crash broke.

was it an addiction or a one time thing? How often does the MLB test and does the test miss stuff like that? How long does it stay in your system? #notacokeheadsoidontknowthesethings

Those friends were with him for the day and got in the boat with him.

You can see the gross error in judgement here and still appreciate the rest of his life. It isn't an either/or situation

I don't know, but he was Cuban and cocaine seems to be a think between Cubans and baseball players. It may have been a one time thing. Not sorry I have no sympathy for someone who made several very stupid decisions with no regard to the safety of others.

If this was some redneck, people would be pissing on his grave
