But that will never go away ever. With the BCS #s 3 and 4 complained. Now it'll be 5 and 6 complaining. Expand it to 16 teams and teams 17-20 will complain. You don't solve anything but just having worse teams complain.

When the Saints lose their 1st/2nd 4th or even 5th game, I'm fine because I know they can still be in the playoffs with those losses. Saints just lost this weekend to fall to 8-3, and I didn't sweat it in the least.

With LSU, especially a decade or so ago when we go into the season with the goal of a title, I'm hanging on the edge with every snap of the entire season knowing that 1 play could turn into 1 loss which could mean no title or losing the ability to control your own destiny. I love that shite.

Explain the melt in ST then

Every Saturday feels like the playoffs in college football. But let's do away with that so we can make it more like the NFL where people care more about their fantasy points than actual game outcomes for most regular season games.

If you went to 8, the issue of a team losing the CCG and a chance at a wild card because of that loss while someone else sat at home and then got in would become an even bigger problem than it is now.

I can assure you when LSU played Troy it did not feel like a playoff game.

not sure how to "fairly" play these extra games unless the playoffs go like this:

5 major conferences settle who gets in with conference championship games as a first round playoff game

the 6 best non conference teams play in a first round playoff game at sites TBD.

after the dust settles you have 8 teams who battle it out on the field, not on who the best liked team is.

the 5 conference winners and 3 at large teams play in what is a second round of playoff games, then 2 final games are played to determine the teams playing for the national championship.

first week 16 teams, second week 8 teams, third week 4, then the national championship game in week 4.

this doesnt completely remove the current "popularity of team" always seems to get in over other teams with a better record that we have now (see ND, ohio state, alabama, etc), but it is about as close to a fair and unbiased record and play on the field gets you there system as you can ever get.

i personally like the 16 team playoff because it is the most fair and it means more games but it also competes with the 257 bowl games filled with 5-7 teams playing like we see now so for money reasons i doubt they would ever allow it. plus it takes away their ability to do things like last year with ohio state getting in when they never earned that right to be there if the system was fair

Exactly, college football purists can't stand the thoughts of this, why??

There’s not really any special logic to the NFL format. You’re just used to it and you accept it.

You know the most logical format? The old MLB system. No divisions, just look at the W-L records and take the top teams. Which meant most teams were out of contention by June, but it also meant the regular season mattered and the best teams got in. This system would not work for college but it certainly would work for NFL. You want logical? There it is. You wouldn’t like it, and there’s a reason MLB scrapped it.

Sign me up.

I think that would be great for the sport.

All 10 conference winners, plus 6 wild cards. Have the committee in charge of the wild cards and seeding.

First round games at seeds 1-8 home stadiums the week after conference championships.
It's not that this playoffs wouldn't be awesome, it would be epic.

The issue is the regular season has lost a shite ton of its value. Now, LSU is in the playoffs. So as an LSU fan, my team can lose to freaking Troy to fall to 3-2, and I can still have hope of winning a national title? No thanks, I do not want that.

It should be ultra tough and a major accomplishment to content for a national title. Having 3 loss teams fighting it out to be ranked 16th doesn't make the situation "better". It just dilutes and waters the frick down the playoff pool.

But if you changed the team name to the Saints and changed the national title to SuperBowl you are perfectly fine with it.

The college playoff system is broken. Its a joke.

Every game matters as well in the NFL, NBA, etc.

why?

Teams have bad games during the season, upsets happen constantly.

Are we going to avoid the fact that you have to be at least average to make the playoffs or the common knowledge that some 8-8 teams maybe lost 2 or 3 games by 3 points or less?

My post referred to 2001 LSU.
