the SWAC has changed in the last 16 years.
Players with a drop of talent are not going to Southern, Texas Southern, etc.
There is not that SWAC pride that was there even years after segregation

yeah they aren't producing any Bobby Phills or Avery Johnsons anymore
Posted on 1/30/09 at 4:39 pm to GeauxChrisSports
So should the SWAC just not get in, or all #15 and #16 seeds that got auto-bids from winning their conference tournament?

If the point of the NCAA Tournament was to let the top 65 teams play for a championship then no the SWAC shouldn't have a place in the tourney. There are a few other conferences you could throw in there as well.

SWAC school does not have the resources, talent, etc to even compete with a North Carolina, WF, Duke, etc.
On a night to night basis, yes. But there is a reason the games are not played on paper

If UNC's entire starting either fouled out, got injured or died in a car crash then maybe a SWAC school can hang around for awhile

Last time Southern played in the tournament against Duke in 2006 the score was 39-30 at half and 70-54 final. Thats "hanging around".

2007: Florida 112 J-State 69
2005: Alabama A&M lost in play in game.
2004: Duke 96 Alabama State 61
2003: Texas Southern lost play in game
2002: Alcorn State lost to Sienna in play in game
2001: Michigan State 69 Alabama Sate 35
2000: Arizona 71 J-State 47
It's better when a SWAC team plays in the play in game b/c they atleast get to be competative

So you think there is a chance a SWAC team could pull off an upset against a #1 seed?

It will NEVER happen in the men's tourney..
Albany very nearly beat UConn a couple years ago. They had a 12 point lead with 8 minutes left and just couldn't hold on. It will happen eventually

You do know that other small conferences produce 16 seeds which lose big in the tourney?

are you serious? Of course they should go. It's a 64 team toruney, not an elite 8 team format.

Seriously, a SWAC team will NEVER beat a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
ummm, they don't always have to be a 16 seed. If the SWAC rep has a great year they can get a better seed.

If you played on a SWAC team that went to the tournament, would you take pride in knowing you are about to go get waxed (its not even close games) in front of the nation?
i assume you are too young to remember 13 seed Southern beating the hell out of 4 seed Georgia Tech.

Why should the SWAC be any different from other conferences? So what they lack the resources of other conferences. They are a DI conference and they meet the criteria the NCAA sets for all of its institutions. Again, as mentioned above, how many other conferences get crushed in 1 v 16 matches. HBCUs have won a few games, Hampton beat Iowa State, Southern b. Georgia Tech, Coppin State beat South Carolina. They are just as worthy of a beat down as the other smaller conferences.

SWAC rep will likely be Alabama State and they will get put out in Dayton on the Tuesay before the tourney

I promise you, in this day and age the SWAC will never be higher than 16th seed. It just will not happen.

#15 Hampton beat #2 Iowa State a few years back.
Hampton is in the MEAC, which is the same thing as the SWAC.

The best seed I have ever seen the SWAC get was in '89, as they were a 9 seed and beat 8 Alabama. I could be dreaming this, but it stcuks out for some reason...the SEC didn't make it out of the first round that year.

Nope since they think they are too good for the FCS/Div 1aa playoffs in football. Send them to the NIT or whatever.

You do know that the Ivy League doesn't send their champion to the FCS playoffs either. Should we send them to the NIT? The SWAC chooses not to go based on some of the same reasons they struggle to field consistently competitive teams, MONEY. The Bayou Classic and other classics crush whatever money that they would get from a playoff game and they would be beyond stupid to bypass that kind of money. They wouldn't win the FCS championship anyway. How many FCS Championships has McNeese, NW St., Nicholls, and SLU won?
