Shelley Long of sports, recent examples

For those who may not get the reference, Shelley Long was a star on Cheers for 5 years and then left. She never really was able to capture that same stardom from the show and the show continued to be a huge success for 6 more seasons. To make it worse, her replacement, Kristi Alley, went on to have a much better career. In light of this, I thought about recent sports versions of Shelley Long. Here are my 2, feel free to add to the list:
1. Kevin Durant - seems pretty obvious, he goes to Golden State, they won a championship before he got there and lost in an epic collapse the year before. During the 3 years he is in Golden State, they win 2 championships and lose a 3rd due mainly to injuries. He gets his feelings hurt, leaves and hasn't been to the conference finals since. Meanwhile, Golden State has won a title.
2. Tyreek Hill - has an amazing career w/ the Chiefs. Wins a championship, goes to another super bowl. Decides he wants more money, leaves for the Dolphins and hasn't won a single playoff game since, including losing in the wildcard to the Chiefs. The Chiefs have won the super bowl in both of the years he wasn't on the team!

Leveon Bell - sat out because he wanted a huge long term deal and refused to play under the franchise tag. James Conner steps in and plays well in Bell's place. Bell signs with the Jets the following year and has a disappointing season, then bounces around to 4 teams the next 2 years before being out of the league
quote:Wouldn't say he fits as an example of what you're going for. Individually he had a career year last season.
Tyreek Hill

Demar DeRozan: great career in Toronto but they trade him for Kawhi and instantly win it all

Getting traded isn’t quite like leaving on your own accord

Drew Bledsoe would be a great example. Star QB for the Patriots, made it to a Super Bowl, gets injured a few years later and a 6th-round rookie makes him expendable. Bledsoe is ok with Buffalo and Dallas over the next few years but hugely overshadowed by Tom Brady.

I remember Jeff Blake playing pretty well with the saints then he got hurt, Aaron Brooks came in and didn’t lose the job

Albert Pujols - signed the big contract with the Angels (although you could argue his best years were behind him, anyway)

Wally Pipp is the only answer.

Don Majkowski
Senior year in college (1986) he separated his shoulder and never let it properly heal.
1987 he’s drafted in the 10th round and started five games for the Packers.
1988 a new coach comes into Green Bay. Majkowski’s shoulder is seriously messed up and he misses some of the preseason but ends up starting by default.
1989 is the year he became “Majik.” Packers go 10-6, miss the playoffs but went to Candlestick and beat the defending and eventual champion 49ers. Majkowski makes the pro bowl, finishes 2nd in MVP voting to a guy named Montana, and he has local endorsement deals from every imaginable place.
1990 he holds out for 45 days and signs on the eve of the season opener. He was one of 8 plaintiffs listed by the NFLPA who were suing the NFL for free agency. When he returns he sort of finds the stride from the previous season but later in the year completely tears the rotator cuff on his bad shoulder. He did have his own weekly TV show called “The Majik Show.”
1991 the Packers were all sorts of terrible. Mike Tomczak, Blair Kiel, and Majkowski all started games. They went 4-12 with two of those wins coming against the 3-13 Buccaneers and one win came against the 1-15 Colts. Despite 90 and 91 being bad years people still loved Majik.
1992 Lindy Infante is fired and the organization restructures. New GM Ron Wolf pissed off a ton of people by trading a first round pick to the Falcons for some unknown 3rd string QB with a funny name. Folks were still Majik fans. Majik gets his ankle destroyed in week 3 and the next we see him playing in the NFL he’s a backup with the Colts and finished his career backing up Scott Mitchell in Detroit.
Once that Favre train got rolling there was no looking back. Majkowski tells a story about how his son wanted to dress up as his dad for Halloween but they couldn’t find a #7 kids Packer jersey. His wife took a #4 Favre jersey, peeled the number off and ironed on a #7 in place of #4. Just a few months prior to this you’d see #7 Majik stuff everywhere in Wisconsin. Then it just disappeared.

It’s Kirstie Alley, by the way. Not sure that I would agree that she had a much better career.
