SVP and our local show was the only reason I listen to ESPN radio.

All the political bullshite the have on ESPN is why their rating are dropping. Just stick to sports and stop talking about race and gays. I can't remember the last time I watched ESPN for anything other than a game.

“It will always bug me the way it went. It will always bug me. I don’t have a massive ego. I don’t walk around here beating my chest about who I am. You can’t act like you’re not aware that you have a decent standing here, you know. I mean I get to do some good stuff.

“I’m in the spot where Dan Patrick was, a SportsCenter anchor who’s in a radio spot in the afternoon … and you think, ‘well if I’m a guy,’ whatever that means, but if I’m one of the main guys at this place and apparently they think enough of me to give me this opportunity on television, I won’t ever understand how it is that our radio show wasn’t treated better. And let me make it be clear, we weren’t treated like stepchildren and we weren’t Third World Nation status, but we were never quite as important.

“Mike & Mike’s a monster. We all understand that why it’s important as it is because of how much profit it generates for the place, and Colin? I don’t know the specifics of Colin’s (Cowherd) finances or whatever, but that show too has certainly profited up here and is important.

“It would have been nice if we could have found a home on TV where we didn’t get bounced around a lot and it would have been nice if we just felt like we mattered more and given whatever my standing is here, it never made sense. It will always baffle me that it wasn’t as important as I wished it would have been.”

SVP & Russillo was simulcast on ESPNews from 1 -3 p.m. ET, but was often pre-empted when other shows like His & Hers on ESPN2 or Outside the Lines took their timeslot when live events forced those programs to move to SVP & Russillo’s spot. Van Pelt added:

“Having said that, I’m not complaining at all about my lot in life and I get this great opportunity to do something on TV, but I loved our radio show. I’m as proud of it as anything I’ve done. It meant as much to me as anything I’ve done professionally.

“And we were right. Ryen and I were right. We knew if we just did our show the way we wanted to even though guys in the corner offices didn’t get it. Like I said on radio, I said this the day I was moving on, it was never for them! They weren’t supposed to get it. It was for people like us, our buddies, our idiot friends and there are a lot of our idiot friends out there in the world. And they found it.

“Our show grew more in the last two years than any show here.”

so disappointing to hear Mike & Mike is a monster, I truly just do not understand that show's popularity.

i mean that just shows a show that we would want has no popular appeal and can't generate revenue for an outlet like ESPN to justify its existence

I can stomach Golic when he doesn't go all meathead, but Greeny is beyond horrible. Haven't listened in years.

I forgot my phone on a couple of commutes the other day, so I couldn't stream music or podcasts, and I found out how barren the morning talk show landscape is.

What an idiotic comment on that article

Here's a suggestion: discuss sports, instead of being bro-dude ex-frat boys who are goofing off on their college radio station. Seriously, I try to listen to them, but they seem to think sports get in the way of their act.

Clearly, that show wasnt intended for that commenter.

that's kind of the big thing with major monolithic shows for the....advanced crowd. we're the minority and find outlets in niche podcasts that don't require the same sort of viewership to survive. we'll never all get on the same page with supporting a major show, and even if we did, that major show would still pale in comparison to a show like mike/mike.

Honestly, for me, you put any sports talk radio on during my morning drive unless the host(s) is just a complete train wreck, and I'll listen to it. Either that or NPR. Depends on the segments. But frick, if SVP and Rusillo were on during the morning rush hour, they'd be enormous, too.

True. That's the reason Leno was so popular. He didn't rock any boats. He just had relatively bland comedy that went over well with the 30 to 70 crowd who were up still but trying to unwind from a long day and wanted something mindless. And he was on during a time in television history when there wasn't a lot of competition and there was no Netflix or stuff like that. Frankly, there just isn't a lot of competition out there for Mike and Mike unless you buy Sirius XM. Otherwise, I can't think of another nationally aired radio show presented by a major network that is available on standard FM channels. And actually, there just isn't much of a major competitor for ESPN. So we get the bland radio we get to capture the widest audience possible.

but not like mike/mike

mike/mike is really bland and has found a way to appeal to both suburban dads who use sports to avoid the burdens of their life as well as mongoloid barbarian urban sports fans (think those who chant J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS)
