This could be spectacular, could have some really great visuals from a park perspective. That also would bring them to 3 major league sports, obviously would never get the NFL because of Sunday, but solid college ball in Utah and BYU should hold many over. Throw in the area as a winter olympic sports mecca and it really has come into its own as a sports region.

They would be MLB's smallest market (20% smaller than Brewers) and would be competing with 2 other pro franchises in the city.

quote:

The Milwaukee Brewers are the smallest market in Major League Baseball, serving a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) with an estimated population of approximately 1.57 to 1.66 million

quote:

Metro Area (MSA): ~1.3 million residents (comprising Salt Lake and Tooele Counties).

The Mormons aren’t on the teams. Basketball and baseball teams play games on Sunday too. Baseball teams do way more than any other sport

Salt Lake would be an awful mlb market just like it’s an awful nba market.

Charlotte Nashville Austin OKC are all better options

yeah, I think it will be Charlotte or Nashville as the new "eastern team" and Sacramento or Portland as the "western team"

I think the MLB will try to add one to each coast.

It will be interesting whether the MLB moves to 4 8-team divisions or 8 4-team divisons.

Nashville is already a shoe-in. The second team will probably be SLC. They will just be easier to deal with business wise than Montreal. Portland maybe but do we really want/need another West coast team? Austin and OKC are already in large MLB markets so they’re out. Charlotte makes sense but not going to expand two teams in the east.

I don't agree with this comment at all... I was stationed in the SLC area for 3 years, they love the Jazz and definitely could support an MLB team. You are forgetting Davis County and Northern Utah and Southern Idaho.

Regional markets…Austin is in Astros and Rangers region. OKC is in Rangers and depending who your service is or what part of the state Royals and Cards too.

Fair point but I just meant as to 90% of games on Sunday.

We really need to stop listing Austin in these threads. Not happening.

You’d have a point if MLS and the NBA weren’t able to move into those markets…

I don’t know wtf you’re talking about.

The Jazz have been and continue to be wildly successful in slc. It’s a tough ticket even when the team is bad.

Way more than u can say about their stint in New Orleans. Or for the pelicans for that matter.

MLB cares about money. there’s more money in Travis county than the entire state of Utah. enjoy your hypotheticals

It’d be such a shame if the MLB chose Austin over Salt Lake City just for the ballpark aspect alone. Not to mention it’s fricking hot in Austin April - October. Hippies don’t even like baseball.

With the current way MLB is structured in terms of revenues and salaries? No way. If there’s a cap and floor regarding salaries and equal revenue sharing among teams like the NFL? It can definitely work
