I would put money on this as well.

For lying on a police report and trashing a soap dispenser?

Except neither of these happened

Educate me. Are you saying he didn't file a police report? Just lied on television? Then the point of my post seems even stronger - the criminal offense is negligible if there was no police report.

My understanding is that there was never a police report filed. Lochte told his mother then confirmed the story when asked by the media.

As for the soap dispenser, pictures released after the incident show no damage to the bathroom. It was an exaggeration by the Brazilian authorities to try to make the swimmers look like the bad guys.

Has there been pictures or video released of the damage caused?

Yes, I saw an imgur post on it yesterday, I'll try to find it later when I'm not on my phone.

I just looked up some photos.

They strongarmed that guy out of $12k for that so-called "damage"?

If Lochte wasn't such a moron, I think public opinion would be more on his side. It's fun to make jokes about him, and the more these jokes happen, the more people ignore the facts of the story. If this had happened to Paul George (a recognized name but not the biggest in his sport), nobody would be talking about it anymore.

I'm confused on this. There seems to have been a formal police investigation. Does that happen without a report in Brazil?

Idle curiosity made me google. According to the SI version of the story (who knows if this is accurate) they did some (unspecified) damage and/or urinated on the walls of the bathroom.

I have no idea. Whatever the exact story is it seems Lochte lied about it and the Brazilians are interested in making a public case about misdemeanor level offenses to make some political hay.

They have more than provided money for compensation for something that isn't even that serious..

They really need to let it go, the thing just got overblown. Drunken idiots with stupid drunken stories. They corrected their version of the account and have given a ton of ridiculous money to it. I don't see what more they want. They have been shamed enough over it.

Brazil is being ridiculous.

He would have been killed in prison if he didn't pay. There is a thriving murder for hire scheme within Brazilian prisons, and the government would have wasted no time in having him killed.

Some retard is going to waltz in here and say I am exaggerating, but look it up.

No doubt he had to pay up. I'm saying that they made it sound much worse than the pictures show.

Unlike Lochte's home country, Brazil's culture doesn't buy in to the notion that you can act badly and not incur consequences.
Have you ever visited Brazil? While working in Argentina back in 1999-2002 - visited Rio several times - everyone is on the take - every one.
