Good read

quote:

ON JAN. 15, four days after Kraft bid farewell to Belichick in Foxboro, Falcons owner Arthur Blank met one-on-one with Belichick aboard his 295-foot, $180 million superyacht named DreAMBoat, moored late that day in Antigua. It was Belichick's first official job interview since 1998, when he met with Al Davis and the brass of the then-Oakland Raiders. The job went to Jon Gruden. In a lengthy interview with Blank, Belichick showed no rust, sources said. Blank told colleagues that he was very impressed. "I think Blank came away from the boat thinking this is my guy," a source close to Belichick said, though from his vantage point, any momentum following that meeting seemed to die over the next week. A second meeting was planned with team CEO Rich McKay and other Falcons executives.

Despite that friendly first session, the unthinkable happened for a billionaire and a legendary coach: Blank and Belichick checked each other's references. Blank spoke by phone, at least twice, to Robert Kraft. Among the NFL owners, Blank considers Kraft his closest friend. Publicly, Kraft and Blank have said Kraft expressed only support and offered praise of his former coach.

But in a conversation with Blank, Kraft delivered a stark assessment of Belichick's character, according to a source who spoke to two people: a close Kraft friend and a longtime Belichick confidant. The source quoted the Belichick source as saying, "Robert called Arthur to warn him not to trust Bill." That account was backed up, the source said, by the close Kraft friend.

I know this isn't the point of the article, but this stood out to me:

quote:

The Carolina Panthers briefly discussed Belichick, before he signed his two-year extension with New England a year ago. But this offseason, Carolina decided to pass, a source said. Panthers owner David Tepper often sifts through data to critique his coach's playcalling.

The Panthers are going to suck for a long, long, long time.

Reading that about tepper makes me realize Jerry Jones is probably not as bad.

That being said, I think it's obvious letting Mccarthy finish this year and underperform, then going for belichick is the move for Dallas.

Atlanta front office said pretty much said I can't contend with bb I don't want him.

Jerry's biggest issue is that he is afraid to be bad so he doesn't take risks. He wants the floor to be around .500, but keeping the floor there lowers the ceiling. I think this has gotten especially bad as hes aged, because hes worried about winning another ship before he dies.

If the inability to have “warm conversations” with your head coach is the dealbreaker, you get what you deserve. There probably aren’t many NFL head coaches who aren’t arrogant, hardheaded assholes.

This is such a nothing burger article.

Kraft warned Blank that his 6 time Super Bowl winning head coach wasn't very nice in the office?

I was expecting Kraft's warning to be, "Bill once had the fire to win championships, but since Brady's last season, he's coasting for a few wins to get the record and piling up millions for retirement."

Tepper is the absolute worst owner in North American sports and there’s no debate about it. He acted like a spoiled, bratty 5 year old dealing with York County and his training center fiasco. When a reporter asked him about the high turnover with coaches and front office staff he went on a rant about his soccer train that no native of either Carolina cares about and said “he brought music to Charlotte, they didn’t have music before I came here”.

Agreed, it's ridiculous. It's not a revelation that Belichick is difficult to work with.

So basically, ESPN is reporting that some people may or may not have criticized Belichick, "according to sources", and that's why he doesn't have a job. Fascinating.

Pretty shitty to throw out the “trust” issue, without giving any evidence other than that he’s not a warm guy.

Kraft comes across as an absolute, gold-plated dickhead. Belichick and Brady made you the most successful owner in the history of the NFL, and you go forth ans assail the character of said head coach, effectively preventing him from working again.

Rich character assassination from a man who literally has paid for sex trafficking.

I would never value the opinion of someone connected to another team. That is silly to me.

I doubt Kraft would do that to Belichick
what good does that serve him?

I don’t think the owners care about wins and losses as much as we do as fans

You think they care about each other more than winning?

Weird article with the sourcing.

They cited sources who knew of sources close to Belicheck/Blank…

So basically a friend of a friend? Typically, sourcing for reporters needs to be direct, not hearsay. Surprised this met ESPN’s editorial standards
