Well a swimming pool should be an exception, but this is why Olympics are generally poor investments for a host: the facilities have little use and value post-Olympics.

So the IOC invariably decides to continue to pick cities who will run up debt rather than choosing locations which already have the infrastructure.

That's what it looked like during the games too. Or was that diving?

Wasn't it reported 2 years ago Brazil struck a large supply of oil making the government wealthy and Brazil free from having to import fossil fuels and even exporting for profit?

Regardless of future use, a pool is still a poor investment... and i swam in college. Virtually no end game for breaking even.

this is true. Even in wealthier countries, for the most part, the olympic sites end up in ruins very shortly thereafter. If anyone cares to explore, Syndney's facilities are in ruins too. Honestly, very few Olympic sites aren't. Atlanta and London are the only ones I can think of that aren't. I know Atlanta turned Olympic village into student housing for Georgia State.

Yeah, the Maracana is the same way, left to rot.

quote:

Rio de Janeiro (CNN) It is one of the most famous stadiums in the world and was a showpiece venue for the Rio Olympics, but six months on from the Summer Games the iconic Maracana looks more ghostly than glitzy.

She also reports that the field is dry and untended, while the inner rooms and offices smell moldy, ridden with holes in the walls and exposed wires. Globo’s photos reveal weeds growing rampant behind the bleachers, missing ceiling tiles, and piles of bleacher chairs thrown about. To make it all worse, the stadium has been without power since Friday, December 30th.

They have a huge supply of oil, the instability of the country and local economy have made it next to nonexistent as if lately. A company I work with that builds pumps for offshore rigs made most of their money in Brazil and now might have to close their doors over havibg to halt business in the region

Sydney's facilities are not in ruins. The Olympic Stadium is now ANZ Park, and hosted the Rugby World Cup a decade ago and still hosts concerts and large sporting events. Guns n Roses is playing there in a month. Here, you can buy tickets here:

https://www.sydneyolympicpark.com.au/

In fact, the whole Olympic park has been repurposed. the swim center is still open, too. It has been overrun by inflatable animals, though

It's simple as this: rich countries can put on Olympics and can do well if there is a post-Olympic plan for sustainability. Poor countries do an awful job and the Olympics bankrupt them. And in authoritarian nations like China and Russia, they also fall into disrepair because they don't give a crap and already got their PR value out of them. they also don't care about the human/monetary cost, so its hard to call it bad investment. China and Russia wanted to be seen as world powers, so... mission accomplished.

Is there any realistic hope they can or will clean up their water supply anytime soon?

Thats damned amazing. Rio has been 6 months. Athens, I get it. Why any country or city would try this is beyond me.

Are there any examples where the facilities of a host city remained and are a continued asset and service to the host community?

New York, LA, London, and Moscow are about it for being able to host and it not ruin the city. Any other examples?

For Winter Games my guesses would be Switzerland, Colorado, Finland, and a handful of Canadian cities?
