I thought Wayne would have long term starter potential. I also thought he should stay another year to develop more slasher technique. His college stroke was silk.

Whats the story on Davidson?
Was his size an issue with going to a big time program?
Why Davidson?

Picking Rubio was not very controversial. The guy had crazy hype going into the draft. Not picking Curry was just absolutely terrible. It was an obvious choice and Flynn felt like a reach when the pick was immediately made.

They were kind of close to him in North Carolina and the best D1 offer he got. He was a little under 6 foot tall most of his HS career and obviously looked like a baby. He played at a small Christian High School in Charlotte that didn't play any of the larger schools. I don't remember hearing much about him in AAU, either. Just a severe oversight by most schools, but understandable to a point.

The talent was obviously there though I’m sure, plus his dad being a long range NBA bomber… pretty huge miss and goes to show the recruiting services and coaches flat out miss sometimes.

Look at the Hornets’ medical staff at that time and tell me Curry’s ankle heals up correctly.

He’d have been better off with Mark Jackson’s faith healing than Ochsner docs.

Yes and I had them going that far in my bracket, cleaned up that year

I can’t remember exactly why but I think it was their 3pt% vs the relatively poor offensive rebounding efficiency of the teams in their sub region, at that point that sort of 1-2 punch had a crazy good outcome rate in the tournament the previous 4 or 5 years.

The Rubio hype train was real but picking a guy who wouldn’t come over for 2-3 years was a problem on one level then they pissed off Kevin Love by not giving him a designated player contract because they were saving that for Rubio.

I am just of the opinion that a “draft and stash” should not be a top 10 pick, especially so at a position where you can only really have one of them.

Flynn getting picked right after Rubio immediately soured things between him and the Wolves and ensured he wouldn’t take a major hit on his Euro contract to come to the NBA, as they saw it as an insult to take another point right after him.

Always remember this article talking about how dysfunctional the Warriors have been. This was right before they got Curry.

shite, that article is after they drafted Klay...Simmons even says that the Lockout is the only good thing that happened to them that year

Crazy to think that a little over 3 years later they would be holding up the Larry OBrien for the first out of 3 times in 4 years

you definitely aren't wrong there. If Eric Gordon goes to Phoenix, he probably becomes an all-star

If you’re young, you don’t remember what a dogshit franchise Golden State was. Basically, every bad thing that plagued the NBA in the 80s, 90s and 00s hit them hard — cocaine, whiffing consistently on high draft picks, talented guys bolting ASAP, giving out bad contracts

shite, there was a HUGE contingent that thought Golden State was dumb as hell for paying him basically a max contract in 2012.
fwiw he didnt get a max deal in 2012. It was for like 10 a year due to his ankle issues. That and the cap explosion of 2016 were why the warriors were able to sign KD

Neither did the Timberwolves, who took TWO point guards before Curry in that draft

Looking back at it, that was a Damn good draft class.

You have 2 1st ballot HOF guys in Curry and Harden.
You have 2 guys who were multiple all-nba guys in Blake Griffin and Derozan.
One of the best perimeter defenders in the league, Jrue Holiday, who it's somewhat surprising only has 1 all-star bid.
Guys who were pretty good but never really reached their potential in Tyreke Evans and Brandon Jennings

And other guys who were just great dependable role players for their teams in Darren Collison, Jeff Teague, Ty Lawson, Ricky Rubio, Taj Gibson, Demaree Carrol, Patrick Beverly, Danny Green, and Patty Mills.

You don't have to convince me any that your story is true. I 100% believe that KD would call another man his own age Daddy.

Jumpshooting teams still don't win. Three point shooting teams win. The math made the 3rd point line a good strategy.

They had some nice complementary players too. The Lovedale guy was a good rebounder, they had a blonde kid who could shoot off the bench and i think the PG led the country in assists. Plus McKillop runs some nice stuff. It was fun watching them on that run.

It honestly is insane. I used to think guys like Ray Allen, Reggie Miller, Dirk, or Bird were incredible three point shooters. And I mean... they are. But Steph is just on a completely different level. Klay too really, though he’s a big step below Curry as well.

Pretty much.

Drafting Joe Barely Cares by trading picks that became several of the Celtics’ 80s cornerstones (Parrish and McHale IIRC), drafting Chris Washburn at 3 in 1986 only to see him crash out of the league due to a coke habit and being fricking lazy, losing Chris Webber due to a bug in the CBA, had Latrell Sprewell choke out their coach, etc.

The whole Webber thing was fricked up all around.

They traded three firsts for him (Penny Hardaway and two future ones), then had to sign him to a special contract because they didn’t have cap room and there was no rookie slot at the time.

That contract allowed him to effectively become an RFA after a year and force a trade to the Bullets because he and Don Nelson butted heads.

So they blew about a decade’s worth of assets on a guy who lasted a year for them.
