The Tampa Bay Rays have unveiled plans for a new stadium across the bay from St. Petersburg that would replace Tropicana Field.

Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg made the official announcement Tuesday that the ballpark would be covered by a translucent glass dome and be built in Tampa's historic Ybor City area.

The new facility is estimated to cost $892 million, which would include the construction of a parking garage, pedestrian bridge and other amenities. There is no funding plan in place for the stadium, and Rays president Brian Auld told a group of business leaders at the unveiling that the stadium "is a very compelling investment opportunity for everyone in the room."

While the park's roof would not be retractable, the park would have sliding glass side walls that would "open completely," according to Rays Senior Vice President Melanie Lenz.

The new facility would have just over 28,000 fixed seats and a total capacity of 30,842 -- which would make it the smallest ballpark in the major leagues.

The team would aim to open the stadium by 2023, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

Not a bad idea. They have to get people in the stands and great offensive displays are a good start.

Pedestrian bridge is what pumps up the cost.

Miami u. is also building a smallish football stadium.
You need 35k capacity to be d1a

I mean, it wouldn't be very smart to build a 50,000 seat stadium when you struggle to get 10,000 in attendence.

Now that it is all done, the funding will pop up from somewhere. It always does.

Do you think Florida has learned anything since they built a stadium for the other baseball team that doesn't draw any attendance?

The park ought to seat 7,000 and be expandable to 28,000 for Yankees and Red Sox series.

I keep forgetting they even have a team. 30K in seats is plenty.

I think that it's tricky, we don't really know how well the Rays would draw with a nice stadium and a relocation to Tampa.

All we know is that Tampa draws 60K (91% full) for the Bucs, and that they are top 10 in the NHL attendance for the Lightning at 19K (100.2% full).

I think you have to estimate a decent gain from those 2 factors alone.
