Yeah it was really just surprising that Michigan had fallen THAT far. App State was just a better team.

Using Gambling lines, Vegas still claims the Norfolk st win over Missouri is still biggest upset in NCAA tourney.

Dind't chaminade beat Ralph Sampson and Virginia?

Nobody even knew who UMBC was. They are a freaking county college. That is enough "wow" right there in itself to go in and beat the top overall seed.

Stanford and USC play in the same conference

This. Sure, USC was a lot better than Stanford but Appalachian State beating Michigan was another planet. People don't realize how much better power 5 conferences are than 1-AA teams. Even bottom tier programs like Kentucky or Illinois destroy teams like Wofford or the Citadel.

App State beating a top 5 Michigan team in the Big House is so much more impressive.

UMBC doesn't have the "omg wow" factor that App St did

Because the entire Michigan team made a big stink about coming back to win a National Title.

And Appy State plays little boy pants football from a lower-tier that people scoff at.

And Michigan was preseason ranked #4 in the country.

I don't care how bad you end up being.

AND THEY WEREN'T TERRIBLE. To the poster that said they were terrible. They went 9-4 and finished 6-2 in the BIG10, beat #9 Florida and finished #19 in the country.

No Top 25 team should ever lose to a 1-AA team.

Especially teams that beat the SEC runner-up like Michigan did.

What's NDSU's winning streak against the P5 again? The gap has closed. Didn't VT get beat by William and Mary a few years back too? There are plenty examples of P5 teams losing to FCS teams, particularly the turn of the millennium. It happened before Appy, it happened after Appy, will probably happen again sometime this year to some scrub P5 team. There are FCS teams that aren't even that good in the FCS that have notched wins against a P5 team.

The only reason it got the pub it did is because Michigan is a big name in the CFB landscape with a rich history and was preseason #5, but they finished with 4 losses. Appy State was the 2x defending champion and won it again that year. I get why it was a big deal at the time and don't get me wrong, it's still a major upset but at the season's end it lost a lot of luster

i'm pretty sure that Michigan team went on to beat a Tebow led Florida team in a bowl game, so no they weren't that bad

What is this Stanford/USC game? Would this not be similar to Clemson losing to Syracuse this past year?

Apply State won their 3rd straight NC that year. And Michigan finished 8-4.
App State still wasn’t playing at another level that year. They lost to Wofford and Georgia Southern after beating Michigan.

No, because this was when Stanford was still playing football with a bunch of nerds.

41 point underdog.

That Florida team had a god awful defense, easily the worst team in the Tebow era, didn't they lose like 5 games that year?

The defense was poo because of all the lost starters from the 06 team but we were still pretty good. I'm certain we would've finished top 10 if we had won that bowl.

That was the same year as the classic 28-24 LSU game in Death Valley.

As they should. Imagine if Alabama was #1 and 13-0 going into the CFP and lost to a middle of the road D2 program.

From a talent perspective, App State over Mich. Small football schools have a MUCH bigger disadvantage against major conference opponents than small basketball schools.

From an impact and notability perspective, UMBC over UVA.

Using stats and metrics - CBS sports declared UVA the greatest defensive team of all-time.

They allowed just 53 points a game in the ACC.

And limited opponents to 30% from the 3-point line.

They gave up 74 to a Community College and the Retrievers shot 50% from the 3-point line.

I was at the Stanford-SC game. It was so surreal. Still doesnt even seem real. The whole experience was so bizarre.
