From a historical perspective, UMBC is #1 based on significance of the win. But I do feel like there was a much larger disparity in talent in the Stanford/USC upset.

I think you have it right.

I watched last night's game with the sound off at a bar, so I heard zero commentary. I also filled out zero brackets.

I didn't know who UMBC was until the game was over and people were calling me to talk about it.

I'm a pretty avid sports fan - post on this board a lot and read articles constantly - and I had literally no fricking clue who UMBC was until they had finished beating the #1 overall seed by 20 points.

Stanford and USC play in the same conference

Appy State and Michigan weren't even in the same classification of football

That breaks the tie for me.

Let’s be real though. USC/Stanford would be the equivalent of Vanderbilt beating Bama today.

That time the Phillies got their asses handed to them by that D2 college team in an exhibition game was an underrated upset.

Yeah the app State upset was probably more legendary but it wasn’t actually as big of an upset as the Stanford/USC game.

Here's my take on the Stanford/SC upset (not like anyone cares, but whatever):

I had went to at least one Stanford game that season....I think it was the home opener vs. UCLA. UCLA crushed Stanford. It was very apparent Stanford was an empty cupboard team. Our best receiver, Richard Sherman, had moved to CB....at the time it didn't make any sense, as the team had limited offensive weapons. Later I found out he and Harballs didn't get along, so he wanted to get away from his coaching and play D.

Then, the QB, TC Ostrander (a big statue of a pocket passer) had a seizure the week of the game and they had to roll with Tavita Pritchard...who had more mobility....but not very much of an arm. All that, and Pete Carroll had made mince meat of Stanford the whole time he was there.

I was working at my pizza delivery job that night, and I taped the game on VHS (!!!), fully expecting a blowout. I delivered a pizza to some rich family in Los Gatos, and a bunch of teenagers answered the door and were screaming "Stanford won! Stanford won!" I was unbelieving, but intrigued...I went home later, popped the tape in, watched the whole thing...and sure enough...they fricking won!

I watched that tape at least 4 times over the next week. John David Booty (the USC qb) was definitely hurt. His throws were all over the place.

I don't even know what Stanford win you are talking about so that is 3rd.

App state is #1. Mich went on to 10-2. It took a block on the last play.

I have attempted to instruct the chronically negatigers that anybody can beat anybody and stop feeding the negativity about coach o.

I was not shocked that Maryland Baltimore county beat Virginia. Virginia's 6th man was out. Recent injury.

I knew they were in it. My housemate was born in Baltimore and raised in Maryland farm town.
We watched.

I didn't do a bracket.

I still have nightmares about that Stanford loss. Biggest upset ever, IMO.

He was, it was a major brain fart by Carroll. Just put Sanchez in, run the football, and we play for a national title that year. Inexcusable

I was a freshman in high school and that was the night of my homecoming dance. You have to remember this was before people had the internet at their fingertips with their cell phones as the iPhone has just come out. People were huddling around the three or so people with the phone at the dance following the score updates

Apply State won their 3rd straight NC that year. And Michigan finished 8-4.

It seemed legendary when it happened but Oregon kicking the absolute shite out of them the following week at the big house just showed us preseason polls are bullshite and Michigan was a terrible team.

I’d put Villanova over Georgetown over App State and Stanford.

No doubt UMBC was the bigger upset of all of those listed.

I saw the USC/Stanford game and although I knew the significance of the loss it paled in comparison to what I saw last night. They didnt barely win, they blew their asses out by 20 and were a nobody college while Stanford at least is a known brand. Anything can haooen in conference play in any sport just about on similarity alone.

And play big boy football. Harbaugh was there.

They went 4-8 that year.

Only Vegas made it seem like a huge upset with their point spread.

Like I said, the 41 point spread was absurd...and it was only in place because USC was getting tons of action from neutrals as a historically favorite to bet on team.

USC didn't even beat Idaho to start the season by 41 points. They didn't beat a woeful Nebraska team by 41 points. They didn't beat Wazzu by 41 points. They didn't beat anyone by 41 points heading into the Stanford game.

A week before the Stanford game they beat a crappy Washington team by 3 points.

They beat Arizona by 7 points. They beat Cal by 10 points.

And after they lost to Stanford. They lost to Oregon.

The only thing notable about that upset was how absurd the point spread was.

Like I said it was a 1995 Nebraska vs. Troy State point spread.

It would be like Auburn being a 41 point favorite over Mississippi State today.

1) UMBC va mainly bc of historical relevance
2) Stan SC Stanford was playing with a backup qb
3) app state Mich shouldn't be on the list bc Mich sucked

UMBC doesn't have the "omg wow" factor that App St did
