And 1 hand on qb should be considered a sack. The personal fouls for "roughing the passer" and qb sliding is ruining the game. Mahomet has a 20yd rush because Riley though he was gonna slide. Qb shouldn't have so much power on the field

This is actually a good idea to consider. How about putting flags on the qb?

The Texans put a pretty good shot on Flacco today as he just went into a slide and they didn't call anything.

So no QB runs? Or just no scrambles beyond line of scrimmage? If the latter, how do you distinguish scramble from run?

If you think this ^^^^ is appropriate then I guess running backs shouldn't be able to lower the head and use their helmet to smash into the tacklers?

Then they would need fo remove the back name from title. Call them Thrower and Handoffer? Or Passer and Handoffer

Borderline shocked there was no flag.

Defender even spun on his back from momentum.

Sounds like a Miami problem

Should’ve played harder

In the Texans' player's defense, Flacco's slide was one of the slowest in NFL history to unfold, so it was kinda hard to gauge.

Just take away the slide and giving yourself up. Then QB can decide if they want to brave scrambling past the line of scrimmage. The easy thing is to take away the protection.

Can’t really give up the slide entirely, but I think the responsibility should be on the sliding player to reasonably avoid contact

If you’re a half inch away from a 270 pound line back about to lay the wood, you don’t get to flail down to get a flag

Same with the sideline. If you simply change it from giving the benefit of the doubt to the QB to giving the benefit of the doubt to the defender, it balances out perfectly

Also they should use the instant booth call in system to negate obviously dog shite calls

QBs should also have much more of a responsibility / skin in the game for passes over the middle. If you throw a hospital ball over the middle to put your slot WR into a car crash, at the very least they need to start a fining/punishment system that they’ve done with the players making the big hits

Only way to have player safety is to find the balance of risk for both parties. Making it safer in one area for one side will inevitably have an unintended consequence that’s likely worse

Awesome... then the defenses around the league won't have to worry about Lamar Jackson running all over the place.

But banning QB runs is pretty ridiculous.

All the qb flops that turn into roughing the passer is what's ridiculous

This is what it took to get a roughing the passer call in the 80s....and 10 seconds after he threw the pass. There basically was no roughing the passer unless it was deemed outside the bounds of the game.

That may have cost the Bears another serious SB challenge.

Back then the focus was on the game. QBs were just another player on the field. They had to deal with getting hit just like everyone else, so they had to be tough.

Today the focus is on protecting marketable players. Yesterday on sports radio I heard someone unironically describe the NFL as a reality TV show about quarterbacks. That's exactly what it is. They don't care about protecting QBs because they feel like they are inordinately at risk compared to other positions. They want to protect them because popular QBs are what drive jersey sales. They have no concern at all about how that impacts the integrity of the game.

Both college football and the NFL are being transformed because of one major shift: in the past people who moved into management positions for the sport were pretty much all ex-coaches. They loved the game itself. Nowadays those spots are filled by businesspeople. They only care about making money.
