I just watched the replay again. There was clear holding and illegal contact on the play by the defender.

Do those players run onto the field to argue with an official??

Given that that isn't part of the rule, it doesn't matter. The rule involves players leaving the sideline and/or being on the field without a helmet, regardless of what they are doing.

I will say that I'm not sure if the helmet rule applies to players coming off the bench. If anything, it was a sideline infraction.

You're missing the point. No ref was going to call that in a playoff game unless he strikes the ref or delays the game in persisting for an unreasonable amount of time.

No ref wants to be that ref that decides a playoff game because a player got a bit mouthy. It's just like how most refs let more happen in regards to pass defense at the end of close games. They don't want to potentially decide the game unless it is something egregious.

Edit: the best thing is that with this "controversy" and how much it'll be brought up by ESPN, we'll almost certainly hear from the NFL office about who is right.

Only whilst the defender was being pulled into the receiver, after which time he threw his hands up.

I wish defenders had alot more leeway than they currently do, but that's the NFL's doing not mine.

You must have missed the part where the defender grabbed and pulled the offensive players jersey during the route.

It was clearly pass inference by the rules.. He made contact with no attempt to go for the ball.. While face guarding isn't a penalty, you still have to turn your head in an attempt for the ball if contact is made..

My neighbor from across the street (a HUGE Vikings fan) couldn't wait to tell me how Pete Morelli was the head official for the Saints - Vikings NFC Championship game.

Typical. NFL has a vested interest in Dallas winning.

Then how do you explain the last decade? And Dallas is typically one of the most penalized teams in the league.

Hell, Dallas was more penalized today The call was bad. But Dallas took an awful offensive PI call that gave them a huge first down late in the first half when they were down 14-0. That made it 3rd and 15. How did they respond, with a fricking 50 yard td on the next play. This was a bad call that left Detroit with 4th and 1 in a situation where they should go for it. How did they respond, by being bitches and punting and then giving up a td. Both teams experience bad calls. One team overcame, one team didnt. The MORE PENALIZED TEAM FOUND A WAY TO WIN

What makes you think he wasn't celebrating with the ref? Don't players always run on to the field to congratulate the referees when they call penalties on their teams?
