I lived in Eugene 1976/77. That year the football team went 4-7, with losses to USC 53-0, Notre Dame 41-0 and UCLA 46-0. That’s a combined 140-0. My how times have changed. The Oregon roster was made up of SoCal party boys who played home games with hangovers.

In a similar vein, Arthur Smith has been reported to be a candidate for the North Carolina job. Can he just make his dad have Fedex bankroll the roster?

I thought you were making this up. But his dad IS the founder of FedEx.

Maybe he should try for the Memphis job?

They are busy spending millions on bike trails and the Denver Broncos.

They literally beat Ohio State this year.

They’ve beaten Texas in their last two meetings.

Oregon recruits nationally. They signed 2 kids from their state and one was a kicker. Their 3 five stars are from TX, AL, and NV. They get players from Bishop Gorman and Mater Dei. They’ve feasted on Texas for years…they even snagged 3 from Florida.

They’re going after the same guys as any other top team.

They raided California for recruits when those schools began to drop off.

They slowly got better to the point that they started getting players from all over.

Of course. That talent allowed USC and Stanford to do well. It’s helped Washington in the past. Oregon is capitalizing.

We beat them in Columbus a few years ago too. This is not the same Oregon program from the past.

This gets overblown. Its Phil Knights personal money

Exactly. Nike as a company isn't Oregon's personal ATM.

I haven't looked it up in a while, but Nike's contract with Oregon used to not be that massive, relative to some of their other big schools.

Like you said, it's mostly Phil Knight's money funneling into Oregon athletics, not Nike's.

Like I said, he used to be a lukeworm donor, then got warm, now it's flaming hot.

Nike is a publicly traded company. with shareholders... He can't raid the Coffers.....he spends his own money.....

And can offer kids shoe deals.

I’m all for it, the more ridiculous it becomes the sooner that some sort of sensibility will come about the entire NIL and transfer portal situation.

Oregon has Phil Knight, we have Big Cat.

Not sure if it still applies but it was reported years ago Wisconsin had more Fortune 500 CEO's than any other school. Some need to step up!

I know non fans would still buy Nike clothing/shoes, but do you think it would change anything as far as Phil Knight and Oregon if these schools(especially the big names)stopped wearing Nike and selling Nike products?

I mean they’re essentially helping fund the Oregon NIL program and then having to compete with them on the field.

Would be interesting to have his love of Oregon tested if/when a big Nike school(s) ask for him to donate $10M to their NIL collective when they go to negotiate a new shoe/apparel deal.
