Gruden's on the highest rated show on the network that DWARFS Cowherd's little radio show.
Money factored in with Simmons but it wasn't just money.

A donkey could be on that show in his spot and it would still be the highest rating thing on ESPN.
The ratings aren't high because of him, they are high b/c of the NFL.

and is only working half the year
Let's break this down:
16 weeks, 16 games...let's say he puts in 1 day of prep for those games...that's 32 days
Let's again say he puts in another day per week for sportscenter spots and various appearances around the world of ESPN...16 days
He puts in work around the draft, let's say 2 weeks total, 14 days
Then let's throw in 2 weeks for various segments throughout the year, 14 days
32 + 16 + 14 + 14= 76, round up to 80
80 days of work

I'm sure ESPN could find an enjoyable analyst that makes 1/6th of that and their ratings would have negligible difference, if any.
But good for Chuckie. I would stay in that gig for as long as they would have me and never go back to coaching. frick that.

Tell that to Kornheiser and Dennis Miller.

They aren't but when you find a formula that works on your most important show you don't screw it up.

Gruden does nothing for me as a color guy and tirico is the most boring announcer on espns roster.
Sunday night football with Michaels and collinsworth is exponentially better.

Tony flat out didnt give a shite and they saw they there was no need to have him there if he wasn't going to prep.
Dennis tried way too hard to be clever. His shtick works in a comedy setting but when a football game is on people don't really want to think about what that Nietzsche reference he just dropped meant.
Regardless, the ratings weren't changed by either of them coming or going on the show. The only thing that does that is the quality of the game.
Replace the entire current team with Joe Tessitore, Jesse Palmer and David Pollack and after a season or so nobody would notice the difference.
It's not that he is terrible at the job or anything, it's just that there is no need to pay big bucks for what he does when you can get competent announcers for far less $$$ to do the exact same thing.

What a sweet gig. Gets to immerse himself in the game he loves for a handsome salary without the anxiety and pressure heaped on NFL head coaches.

Lol you have no idea. Cowherd was terrible and all he had was a stupid radio show at a time when no one listens to the radio. Bill Simmons was much bigger than Cowherd and actually was pretty good, but Gruden is one of the best color analysts in the game. I'd much rather him than any other color guy espn can roll out there. He's a Super Bowl winning coach with a good voice and in depth, knowledgeable commentary based on being a Super Bowl winning head coach. Far better than the color analysts with no experience in the field or the career backup QBs or the washed up coaches who got fired from their only gig

after taxes and paying his agent it's only like $3.25 million
He doesn't even qualify to post on the OT. Poor man.

Because he's an average coach. Teams don't want him, fans of teams want him.

He is not that good of a coach? His act wore thin in Tampa and nobody else wants him.

gruden is the face of possibly their biggest investment

So instead of ponying up for Simmons, they pay him 6 million a year?

It boggles my mind that that guy who started Grantland and 30 for 30 wasn't like a 10 million per year guy. That said, someone on here made the point that Grantland really doesn't generate much money. The bland corporate machine named Mike and Mike is a much bigger moneymaker. As for Gruden, I think there had been so much juggling with the Monday Night Football crews the last 20 years that ESPN is just grateful they have it somewhat right. Chucky is pretty entertaining while also providing solid technical insight. I don't think any other NFL announcing team is better, although I can see arguments for Al and Collinsworth.

Absurd. No wonder ESPN is slashing all of its employees
