They’re 3-4 this year, think they wish they kept Franklin? VT currently 5-2 in the mix for an ACC champ birth.

The regret should be passing over Chesney who wanted the job.

Hiring James Franklin without the recruiting talent was certainly a choice.

Matt Campbell is the perfect example of a guy who was good where he was

Overreacting after half a year with a new coach never backfires

When they first fired Franklin, I understood it. When they hired Campbell I thought they probably should have just stuck with Franklin if that was the best they could get to replace him.

Campbell was like their 6th choice. Penn State THOUGHT they could get someone better than Franklin. Turns out they were wrong.

The last few coaching cycles have shown you need to have your guy lined up before hiring someone. Several teams ended up worse off after being unable to hire their top choices.

PSU should have fired Franklin years ago. VT was stupid to hire him. With that said Campbell might not be the answer but it's way too early to tell.

Franklin wasn’t “rapey” enough for them.

And they don't play Ohio State, Indiana, or Oregon this year or 2026 could have been far worse.

They screwed up the search and ended up hiring him after the portal had closed. Most of us knew this season was a throw away.

They were preseason top 20 and plenty people thought they could be a playoff team because their schedule misses Ohio St, Indiana, Oregon, and Iowa. People thinking that about a bunch of Iowa St transfers was dumb but this was not thought of as a throw away season a month ago.

Franklin only won at Vandy because he let a bunch of thug rapists in.

Then he won at Penn St for a decade. They overvalued who they are when they fired him and now they're paying for it.

Franklin would have PSU in a 24 team playoff every year. He’s a solid consistent coach. Not great but good. There are hardly any “great” coaches available.

This PSU team is an Iowa St roster playing dress up

I've always thought they assumed they would be able to get Cignetti.
