Maybe they thought that.

I have always had the impression that Penn State thinks a little too highly of themselves. I thought that even before the Paterno/Sandusky stuff.

It has been 40 years since they won a championship. Their playoff "run" on 2024 vs SMU and Boise State was more a product of how stupid the seeding system is.

Twitter is not necessarily a good barometer, but my feed was inundated with crap about their white-out game. They think that is one of the best spectacles in sports and that people tune in just to see it . Newsflash: nobody gives a shite. And they have lost like 5 white-outs in a row. They are similar to Nebraska. Relevant a long time ago; now very average

Some of y'all let your emotions control your objectivity. Penn State is worse right now than they were with Franklin. But that may change. And it may not.

The absolute worst thing about Campbell at Pedo St is him embracing Paterno (which for all his faults Franklin didn't do).

We all joke about A&M being a cult but it's the real deal in middle PA.

Was a stance required one way or the other? I think I’d just leave that topic alone.

There is a bunch of them on Twitter who still think Sandusky is innocent. And they are serious.

Could end up like when Nebraska thought they’d do better than Solich

I believe Campbell was far from their first choice. They settled on him.

Franklin was 4-21 at against AP top-10 opponents, including 1-18 in Big Ten games. Not only were fans chanting fire Franklin at his last few football games, they started doing it at other sporting events.

He had completely crashed and burned in the final few weeks before being let go. PSU was the first team to lose consecutive games as 20+ point favorites since the 70’s.

If you want to be taken seriously as a football program, you cannot leave that guy at the helm at that point. He was on the hot seat even prior to his final season.

I can't help it if you actually believed a bunch of talking heads and idiot AP voters. All those people see is the helmet stickers. Y'know, the same folks who told you Arch Manning was a sure fire Heisman and top draft pick.

Absolutely no regrets. Give Campbell a chance. He was a late hire and brought many Iowa State players and coaches with him. Clearly the players are not good enough to compete in the Big Ten. Give him a couple more years.

Franklin already has two losses. Soon three with Miami coming up. Franklin is about Franklin. FACT.

I think they would have kept Franklin if the fans didn’t revolt against him. And they took their sweet time to hire Campbell.
But 48 players left the program via the portal as well as their entire recruiting class.
It was never going to be a great year at Penn St no matter who they hired.
The vast majority of new coaches don’t do that great their first year since the transfer portal opened because there is a talent drain. Just because Cig & Chesney have doesn’t make it the norm, it’s the exception.
It’s like saying every 7th round draft pick will become Tom Brady

Aside from covering up kiddy-diddling and pedophilia, sure, he did absolutely nothing.

He took over a program that suffered arguably the most embarrassing scandal in history, rebuilt it amidst sanctions harsher than anything faced since SMU, and made the national semifinal.

The following season he lost a 2OT game to an eventual national semifinalist, then got upset by UCLA and Northwestern in close games.

Totally lost control

They then went on to lose to Iowa, tOSU, and Indiana after firing him, let their whole roster and recruiting class bail for V. Tech, where they’re winning. Meanwhile, they hired their 7th choice who brought a second rate big 12 roster and are going to post a losing record against a very favorable schedule.

Penn state is going to suffer mightily for firing him and hiring Campbell. They like to fancy themselves as a powerhouse like Ohio State, but their history since joining the Big Ten says otherwise.
