But in the case of Penn State, the NCAA appears to be using the Freeh report -- commissioned by the school's board of trustees -- instead of its own investigation, before handing down sanctions.

So, technically the NCAA must have had to classify this...as a "self-reporting" punishment.

At least it's better than using a Yahoo article as the entire basis for banning a football team from bowl games for 2 years.

Which in this case it did allow the abuse to continue, 10+ years after it was 1st learned of.

All of the PSU stuff aside, what most have ignored is the close ties to SECOND MILE, the State of Penn, and the University. When this knot is unwound it is going to get VERY VERY ugly. Sweetheart Deals cut between political allies, cover-up between the then Atty. General (who is now Gov.), the PSU Board of Trustees, and Second Mile Board members.

The blood letting has just begun.....

Who gives a shite if they are in jail? The NCAA can't come in just because the offense got them jail time? And in every case of the death penalty innocent people get punished. Sorry shite happens. Pete Carrol was long gone and USCs football program didn't do anything wrong...they still got hammered.

I HATE when somebody is made an example. The NCAA does this all the time. One program gets punished back to the Stone Age and nobody else even gets investigated. Watch the SMU documentary. SMU got crucified. Texas A&M gave Eric Dickerson a Trans Am AND HE DIDN'T EVEN GO THERE. Every school in the SWC cheated their asses off and I don't remember the big state schools getting hammered.

No, I'm not suggesting that other schools harbored child molesters, but I am suggesting that other schools covered up criminal behavior and won't get investigated now because the NCAA already "made their message."

This is the line of thinking that makes no sense. The concept of due process has its roots in formal logic. ALL organizations should follow logical thinking.

They sure haven't reacted this quickly with Miami or UNC.

And they've actually broke NCAA rules all over the place.

This whole situation - ALL OF IT! Is about too much power in one person. Someone who can't do anything wrong in the eyes of the fawning fanbase...YOU!

I didn't want to reply but you are clearly an idiot.

Saban has power, probably too much. Until he uses that power in a heinous way or anything relatively close to what happened at PSU, you're really reaching.

And I you sir.

Usually marginally intelligent people think they're quite smart but I applaud your acknowledgment in failing to comprehend concepts and logic for higher intelligence.

They say whatever the punishment it is will be unprecedented.

Kicking them out and telling the to reapply for membership in so many years is not out of the question at all and in fact looks like a very appropriate punishment.

I think this is why the DoE eventually gets involved and Penn State's federal funding gets impacted.

This is much bigger than anything the NCAA can do.

Nobody said he did. Bama fan brought up "the culture." The football culture of worship...he said that was the problem. He's a hypocrite.

You're a fan what do you expect but denial from people like you...your word means nothing...and you don't even realize how you look as a fanbase to the outside world. Eerily similar in the pure form of culture which Bama fan wanted burned to the ground. What a laugh.

i love the elitist internet posters. you using hypotheticals of this happening at other universities with "cult-like" followings is quite irresponsible.

I disagree. The NCAA should not be meting out sanctions to Penn State for things that did not give Penn State any competitive advantage.

lack of control, by people who not only ran the football program but ran and fund the school as a whole esp the program that has helped mold Penn State into the top tier university it is today.

The the cult environment that has over come state college

The University did not make conscious decisions to do wrong. Nor did the football program. Individuals, people, made those decisions and should be punished. The people need to be punished. The institution does not.

The depth of the people involved will probably never be known. Fact is the leaders of the Athletic Department chose to try to keep this quiet to protect the Football program.

The NCAA and the word "unprecedented" is like the Department of Redundancy Department. They don't follow precedent, so that is their precedent.
