So USC, the institution, is allowed to cheat and receive the benefits of that cheating without any consequences whatsoever as long as all individuals directly involved are no longer present (whether it be from being fired, resigning, exhausting eligibility, etc) when they get caught, or when the investigation is concluded?
Do you really think a fine and a probationary period would have no effect? Coupled with finding a new coach? USC's bowl ban hurt the current players more than Bush and Carroll. It's pointless.

Me and everyone who's ever had to work and scrap to pay their way through college while also working a full-time job wants to punch you in the face right now.
If playing college sports is so terrible, why do they do it? No one's making them.
As I suspected, you are just jealous of their success. I don't know what you think makes your line of work more noble than theirs. The truth is on an open market, they would get paid way more than you and the only reason they don't is because they get screwed over by a governing body.
Now, if you are a liberal I don't expect you to understand this. You probably think construction workers deserve more money than business executives because they "work harder."

You don't know why their accreditation is going to be reviewed, do you?
Because of everything that has happened. We're discussing the NCAA and PSU though. Not PSU and their accrediting entity.

Dude...I don't think even the death penalty could hurt as much as what they are about to get slammed with.
At least this punishment spares the peanut vendors.

It is pretty shitty to punish USC and the AD for years for actions of Bush/Carroll/others
Not when you consider that Carroll knew the rules and what the penalties could be.
Bush should be despised around USC.
quote:
If the coach is involved, the school has an out and the coach loses his job.
I'm pretty sure it's been a standard clause in coaching contracts.
quote:
Why punish the rest of the team though?
To put the entire organization/institution/program on notice and future leaders on notice. The players on scholarship get to keep their scholarships. All they give up is post season play in most cases.
quote:
In USC's case, why hit them 5+ years after the fact when the entire team had turned over?
Again, to let everyone involved know the seriousness of the infractions.
quote:
I just don't like the idea of punishing an entire program for the acts of a few.
It's not like players lose scholarships in most cases.

In reality, they get screwed over more than anybody else in the country.
Find me another "job" where somebody gets paid so little(scholarship, stipend, etc) vs the amount of money they generate and thus the value they would get on an open market.
What a freaking idiot you are.
1 yr tuitions for:
Public, four-year or above:
Pennsylvania State University-Main Campus: $15,250
Add in dorms, food, training they get and access to gyms, pools and other incidentals that normal people have to pay for.
Then go and see what the free market pays.. because, you know.. they can go play pro football out of high school... Arena league, cfb.. european...
They get close to $100,000 in benefits to play a game, and hone their talents into a possible multi million talent. Give me a break about the poor athlete crap.

Not if they have to play all of their games on the road, which is a rumored sanction.

The NCAA does not have the authority to levy a fine and a probationary period is what they received. USC's bowl ban hurt USC more than it hurt the current players, Bush, and Caroll...that is a fact and that is the point.

Loss of scholarships and post-season, but no details until tomorrow.

The money is not a damn handout. LSU does not have to use all of their scholarships. They give them out because its a good business decision. They are making more money off of they players attending their school than they are giving them. So if we deem that Joe Blow third string right guard is worth that much money, how much do you think Tyran Mathieu or Zach Mettenberger would get if it weren't for the NCAA?
I can guarentee you it would be a lot more than the scholarship plus benefits they get now.

There is no real free market because of the NCAA. That's my point. That's how the market works. When a government steps in and puts restrictions on it, its not free anymore.

"Unprecedented" NCAA penalties for Penn State to be announced Mon. at 9AM EST
quote:
I referenced it earlier, but Penn State defenders don't want to discuss that.
Well it isn't really relevant to the NCAA/PSU discussion about NCAA penalties. If you want to discuss their loss of accreditation then start a new thread.
It is relevant to the extent that loss of accreditation would mean loss of membership in the NCAA.

And what they did concerns the athletic program....how? Did anyone gain a competitive advantage? Was there money given to players to keep quiet about the scandal?
i'm very torn on the issue of competitive advantage. on the surface, it looks like no advantage was gained.
but, by covering up sandusky's heinous actions, penn state may not have gotten a compettive advantage, but they were able to maintain their image of a clean program, a program with a coach that did things the right way, a program that preached "success with honor". and, i'm sure all of this was used both for penn state and against their rivals on the recruiting trail.
and, i don't know if that qualifies as a competitive advantage. that would have to be defined by the ncaa.

Mett could have declared for the draft this year if he wanted. He's counting on LSU coaches to develop him to NFL-caliber.
