Check out this losing streak in the Big East

How much longer before Georgetown fires him? Dude is horrible

That’s incredible futility. He’d be gone if he weren’t a school legend. They’ll let him ride out the season and show him the door politely.

The fact he was retained last year shows Georgetown has quit on basketball.

What's crazy is the apparent lack of competitive games in that graphic. I only counted 11 single-digit losses.

It's like Ewing made a deal with the devil for that Big East Tournament run a couple years ago.

And to think that they could have hired Dan Hurley. I know that even after death, John Thompson cast a large shadow over the program, but they need to break away from his “tree” and being in some new blood.

The oddest part is they pulled the plug on JT III relatively quickly given how much rope they've given Ewing. He choked in the 1st rd a lot but they fired him two years removed from making the tourney.

Landscape has shifted. The era of small schools having competitive teams is over.

Yeah Georgetown is pretty much checked out on basketball. I’m not sure the admin is particularly unhappy about it.

The Big East got 6 of their 11 teams in the NCAA tournament last season. Georgetown has one of the largest enrollments in the league, over 20,000 students, and is about the size of Ole Miss and Oregon, and far larger than Vanderbilt, Stanford, Northwestern.

JTIIIs record was actually pretty impressive given the circumstances. At that point the basketball facilities were so bad that lots of players would regularly go to the student rec center, which was itself extremely outdated.

Yeah, JT III was screwed over when you compare resumes and the actual results at Georgetown. I’m sure he wishes he was given 1/2 the rope that Ewing has been given.

Thompson was coach for 13 years and had winning seasons the first 11 years, including at last 20 wins in 8 of those 11 years, and a Final 4 berth. He went 15-18 and then 14-18 and was fired.

Ewing has been coach for 6 years and only has one winning season in those 6 years. Yet he is still leading the program.

This has to be his last year coaching there

Mid major schools are currently #1(Houston), #6(Gonzaga), #8(Xavier), #15(UCONN), #18 Charleston, #20 Marquette, #22 Providence, #24 Florida Atlantic

The issue with Georgetown is they just may not be a program without John Thompson involved. He and the fruit of his loins account for 29 of 31 tourney appearances for the program.

It only takes a couple of stars to field a strong team. You keep hammering the recruiting trail, and you’ll snag a couple.

Villanova, Gonzaga, St. Mary’s, Dayton, Loyola, Creighton, Seton Hall, Murray St, Richmond, Marquette…I could go on.

In 1985 you had Georgetown, St. John's and Villanova in the Final Four. Big East basketball was THE destination for the top talent in the 80s. Then Duke took over.

With that said, I think everyone has hit the mark on the state of the program. The local sports radio doesn’t talk about the area college teams much, but in the 6-7 years since I’ve been here the only time I’ve ever heard them talk about Georgetown basketball was when Ewing was hired.

I also went to the SC-Georgetown game earlier in the year and they had a promotion that their upcoming vs Sienna was free for any DC resident. Now I get it’s Sienna and a lot of people here live outside the actual city limits… but free tickets to the entire city!? The announced attendance for that game was 3,526 by the way.
