This came across my Twitter feed and I can't believe I never heard this story before

quote:

Kevin Gallagher
@KevG163
September 7, 1980

One of the zaniest endings to an NFL game

Later admittedly being high on cocaine, #Packers kicker Chester Marcol collects his own blocked FG attempt and scampers 25 yards for a TD, lifting Green Bay to a 12-6 opening day OT victory over Chicago at Lambeau.

That hall rocketed right back at him. Twitching on coke probably helped him get his hands up in time to catch it.

Corey Haim played him in Lucas a few years later.

Between the coke and the adrenaline rush of being a kicker scoring a game-winning TD in that manner, he probably keeled over by the wall like he did because he thought he was having a heart attack.

Imagine being a Packers fan at Lambeau. It’s tied and you’re team is about to kick the game-winning FG. You look at the sideline and your kicker is doing rails before running onto the field and then that happens.

The 80s were a better time

If he was still high in OT that means he was doing it during the game right? Totally not speaking from experience here but a dose of blow doesn't last that long.

He probably took a discreet snort when they went into overtime and realized it might all hinge on his performance.

Totally not confirming this unconfirmed statement on the lasting effects of blow, but if he was truly "high" he had to have done it after halftime. Or so I've read/been told by degenerate friends/strippers.

EDIT
And I just realized he scored all 12 points for the Packers that day. What a great country.

The kicking game in the NFL has come a long way in the last 50 years. A 68% rate gets you released midseason these days.

There's a reason Warren Sapp always told everyone on his team's not to frick with his kicker.
