Just when you thought attempting to trademark the word “The” was the greatest length Ohio State could reach in attempting to shield its precious brand, the school went ahead and picked a fight over a single letter.
Overtime Sports Inc., an online sports network, sued Ohio State University in federal court on Monday after the school attempted to block the company from trademarking its letter “O” logo, according to the Associated Press.
Ohio State reportedly asked Overtime in July to stop using the logo, claiming it was too similar to its own trademarked block “O.” In response, Overtime filed a lawsuit in New York City, where the company is based, to request that the school be prohibited from attempting to stop Overtime from using its logo.

And it’s completely ridiculous when they do it too. Especially over logos that aren’t remotely similar except with the use of the same letter.

As someone whose been on both sides of Mark disputes. It’s Ohio States obligation to defend its mark.. they look to be different enough to me but that doesn’t change the fact that they defend it..

USC fought a 10 year trademark battle against USC and won.
The case arose when Carolina attempted to register its SC-logo and Southern Cal opposed the trademark registration based on its own interlocking SC-logo. [See hats below] Carolina retaliated by moving to cancel Southern Cal's trademark registration of the initials "SC" based on the mark's suggestion of a false association between Southern Cal and the State of South Carolina.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ruled that the University of Southern California has priority of use when it comes to the “SC” logo, including the interlocking version.

You are getting tons of downvotes but you are correct. Trademarks have to be defended. It has nothing to do with Ohio State.
Get mad at the lawyers who reinforced this stupidity.

Why hasn't Ohio State sued the University of Oregon yet?
