Conferences have lost all meaning.
Much like teams are now just a collection of individual mercenary players, conferences are just collections of individual mercenary schools.
Everyone and everything in college sports is now just one slightly better deal away from leaving.

He said the part aloud that everyone outside the Big Ten has been saying for years.
quote:
“I will say that there's only a couple of schools that really represent the biggest brands in the Big Ten, and you can see that

Ted Carter might need to watch what he's saying here...
In 2024, the B1G brought in approximately $928 million in revenue associated with athletics. That's nice:

Through the academic alliance, B1G brought in $10 billion in funded research which also is often shared among universities for shared medical, technological, and scientific projects:

It would be a bad idea for Ohio State to give up the $10 billion golden goose facilitated through their B1G affiliation just for a few million more in athletics.

It's the main reason I don't care about college football anymore. I hate the NIL and transfer portal nonsense too, but the conferences make no sense because college sports is all about the egos of the donors and boosters.
My school is refusing to schedule its #1 rival in non conference after this season because of ego. There is no reason whatsoever we shouldn't be in a conference with them, and no reason whatsoever we shouldn't play them every year in non conference if we are to be in separate leagues. But muh ego.
We saw it with Texas and Texas A&M. No reason for them to go 13 years without playing. But muh ego.
Oklahoma and Texas had to leave the Big 12 because they'd rather lose to Ole Miss and South Carolina than Kansas State and Iowa State. Egos.

College football has been nothing more than background noise for me this season. I have yet to sit down and watch a game.
Didn't even watch my own team's hyped up Monday Night opener.
Don't care anymore. If I am going to watch pro sports I'll watch the highest level of pro sports, the NFL.

just for football, their baseball team is still really good

So kick out the team that beat both Alabama schools last year.

What are they going to do?
If 12-14 teams tell them to get bent what are they going to do? OSU, Michigan, and Penn State could break off and make their own conference but it won't be much of a conference with only a few teams.

Enjoy the “super conference” and the inevitable 24 team playoff that will play 2nd fiddle to the NFL in January

I have said this before but the B1G has manipulated the sport in order to stop the SEC dominance.
The transfer portal, the abuse of NIL, etc... all of that was orchestrated by the B1G to take over and all due to the finances generated.
This is an OSU-Michigan driven thing and now OSU will make the rest of their league pay for their inflated NIL bill.

Notice the fans of the Big Ten were always the main ones saying “pay the players”… you never heard that much from SEC fans

It’s like the last 10-15 years there’s been a huge shift to just absolutely squeeze as much as they (college football, corporations, restaurants, etc…) can.
And don't forget subscription models. It's like all of business jumped the shark and decided customer satisfaction < short term profits to an absurd degree in the last few years.
Is there anyone who enjoys/gets extra value from this?? It seems like a "win-win" deal is a thing of the past

They're going to do exactly what they are doing and leverage for more cash or less games at noon. One of the biggest problems for OSU is they end up on noon far too often and Fox uses them for the publicity but OSU doesn't get any more out of it than Purdue does.
OSU loses out on west coast recruits being able to make it into town at times because they play on Friday night and can't make a noon et kickoff. How can a CA kid make it in for OSU/Michigan if he plays until 10pm PT. It's like a 4 hour flight from L.A. to Ohio and 3 hour time change. You need to get a pre 5 am flight or make it for kickoff of a noon game much less enjoy the day. It's something the B1G needs to look at for visitors at least. Maybe the answer is you limit how many times a team can be in the noon Fox slot going forward.

OSU has been on Big Noon 23 times. The only team with half as many appearances is Michigan with 17 (like 5-6 of those are OSU/Michigan games). PSU has 11 and is a distant 3rd No one wants to tune into Rutgers/Iowa at Big Noon. We all know that
That’s because the Big Ten outside of 4 teams or so is compete arse. But tOSU sure had no problem using those schools and their footprints to get more money.
Greed like OSU is showing is what has destroyed college football. Hope they fall flat on their faces.

They play games other than WFOSU/Michigan… it’s the NIL era, do recruits even need to go to campus anymore?

The other 2/3 of the conference seems to be content on riding the coattails of the top 1/3 of the conference to landing big TV contracts that they'll get an equal share of.
