Someone I know also knows OBJ. He's not gay. And the women that OBJ sees are insanely hot.

Cam's negatives to a lot of people on this board are what would attract him to someone in a poor black community

Most of the Cam hate here is because of he played for a division rival in college and plays for another division rival in the pros.

Right and you can't even point to a guy like Colston in a lot of examples because he's not a star. A lot of young black males from lower class neighborhoods don't grow up wanting to be an investment banker or the president of the United States. They want to be like that dude who's on TV catching touchdown passes and doing hilarious dances in the endzone afterwards.
Colston is a more "local" star that NOLA and his hometown in PA might aspire to be, even though he's probably done now...

The black lower class would want to be the President or investment bankers if they thought they could achieve it, and we're still striving for equality in those areas. They want to be Cam Newton, etc. bc they see a clear pathway to it and dudes that look like them doing it

Correct.

My point is that imitating guys like Cam and Odell is progress for those communities.

We still have a lot of work to do so that more of them dream to be something big outside of the world of sports but there's progress in the "image" department.

I don't know if I'd throw Kobe in that group. Kobe was clean-cut with the mini-fro and had no tattoos. Then, he had the Colorado situation and got a bunch of tats. Now, I wouldn't really associate him with the colorful clothing and lens-less glasses that Westbrook and LeBron wear. I'm not saying he is a thug or anything, but he seems to just have his own style.

kobe dresses professionally/conservative; like a businessman. Same as Jordan did.

Kanye deserves credit for sure, but the majority goes to David Stern and the NBA imo.

Kanye has furthered the "movement" but Stern and Co. were the ones who started it.

As to the OP, it's a jealousy thing imo.

Average people see a guy with tons of money, tons of fame, tons of women falling off them, tons of talent, and tons of personal success, and the response is to find something "wrong" with the guy.

Look at how many A list celebrities that have been hit with gay rumors. It's been like that for a long time.

It's a coping mechanism for some people I guess. "Yea I'll never be as successful/rich/interesting/talented/etc. as that guy, but I heard he fricks guys, so really I wouldn't want to be him/ I am "better" than him.

Cam Newton?

You may need a refresher on some of the things he's doing off the field nowadays.

I feel bad for any gay person who feels like they have to live a lie, but I especially sympathize with black athletes.

OBJ is a young black male from the deep south playing NFL football. If he is gay (and I have no idea if he is) no demographic has it harder. Being openly gay in the Bible belt is tough, being openly gay in African-American circles is even harder, and being gay in a professional men's locker room is the hardest of all. He has EVERY reason to hide it.

I honestly hope he isn't, because if he is dude's gonna have a stressful next 15 years.

21st century media, where they keep you entertained about a player's sexuality or who he's sleeping with (or not sleeping with) more than his on-field play.
