OBJ "outing campaign"

LINK
This article really grills a certain demographic and is absolutely correct in its assessment.
As the article says:
quote:
Leave Odell Beckham Jr. alone. If he’s gay, y’all aren’t doing a good job convincing him to ever come out. And if he’s not, we need more men like him—don’t force him into a box somebody else made. Let him dance.
It's an interesting take if nothing else.
LINK to OBJ dancing foot loose and fancy free
There's also a picture going around of OBJ nose-deep in some girl's vag so I tend to believe he's just living his damn life and we need to let him dance.
Also, FWIW:
Savage.
What I'm really trying to figure out is why any of this matters and why I see shite like this on my Facebook timeline.

a. he's a major star in a major media market
b. we love to gossip about our entertainment stars
c. he plays in a macho sport and is being called out by persons appealing to the most barbaric, lower class mindset
d. there is a progressive conflict with "toxic black masculinity" and the LGBT and feminist orthodoxies

well, when you put it like that

Odell Beckham's eccentric personality is a lot better of an example for young black men than the barely literate "macho players" in the NFL. I've noticed a lot of young black kids are imitating him, too. That's great, Odell Beckham can read and he's never murdered anyone. If the worst thing that comes from it is that young black men dance around and are arrogant during sporting events, we're making progress

Actually, the NBA started this trend and stars like Westbrook, D Wade, CP, Blake, even LeBron and Kobe have been clean cut and "nerdy/cool" for quite a while.
NBA has been non-thuggish for FAR longer than NFL and its players (and David Stern, ultimately) deserve a TON of credit.

absolutely
it's a fine line that progs don't know how to really walk, and only black progs are allowed to really address (like author of article in OP)

QBs have different rules, esp compared to WRs (who are often complete egomaniacs)

The article reminds me of a sociology event I had to go to at Xavier about 4 years ago.
Topic about "Black men and their masculinity" and how they "feel" less of a man when they're in a relationship with a woman who can do "a man's job". Also, that some black men that "take part in feminine affairs/events" feel they get unnecessary backlash by their african american brothers.
Personally, total culture issue and two of my close classmates who are happily married now were pretty insulted by it. They're 6'+ tall black guys who were totally non-athletic and loved to dance and sing instead of playing football and basketball with other guys at school.

Definitely. I mentioned that in the last thread about this topic, too. The culture shift from Allen Iverson to Dwyane Wade and Aaron Hernandez to Odell Beckham is an incredibly positive thing.
not comparing Iverson to Hernandez in the sense of being a thug. Just meant the "hard guy" persona.

i hate to do it, but kanye gets the lion's share of the credit there

Disagree. Everytime I watch him play all I see is a me first attitude. Showboating and dancing. Petulance. He's no better a role model than any other player. How is he a role model? Does he have a foundation to mentor youth? Does he try to improve the lot of his neighborhood? Or is he just engrossed in his own persona.

Kanye does get a huge share. I think the NBA players were first though, thanks to Uncle David's dress code. With superstars like Wade and LeBron being well spoken and clean cut and an incredibly famous rapper like Kanye doing the same, it definitely impacted urban society, especially if Kanye can be clean cut and frick Kim Kardashian.

I don't think you get the point, really.

I don't know if I'd throw Kobe in that group. Kobe was clean-cut with the mini-fro and had no tattoos. Then, he had the Colorado situation and got a bunch of tats. Now, I wouldn't really associate him with the colorful clothing and lens-less glasses that Westbrook and LeBron wear. I'm not saying he is a thug or anything, but he seems to just have his own style.

he's a better role model than what came around in the 90s/early 00s, which was hendo's point
OBJ is a HUGE improvement over that

he's in no way a role model.
but a lot of LSU fans love him, because, well, that's what they do.
