That is what I was told this weekend. The Big 12 will expand to 12 teams and admit Louisville and Notre Dame. But here's the kicker:

Notre Dame will not compete for the Big 12 conference title in football. They will play around five Big 12 games every year, and still get to play their traditional rivalry games. In every other sport, they will compete for the Big 12 title.

Notre Dame would still get to keep their own TV deal for football games.

Thoughts on this?

Honestly, it makes sense. Texas wants the ND model and the Big 12 exists so teams can have uneven distribution of revenues.

horseshite.

The only way that should stand is that, when the NBC contract expires, they join the Big 12 contract.

ND is not in a particularly good position to negotiate, given that the Big Ten is moving on without them and that all of their traditional partners are going to have a LOT of obligations each season.

Service academies joining the expanded Big East for football eliminates a lot of their scheduling flexibility IMHO.

Sorry, I found out more info about that Urban Meyer story, which Lance Zierlein also floated before I did. Let's just say that there was a great chance that Urban Meyer was going to be the head coach at UT. If Tressel doesn't get fired, it may have happened sooner rather than later.

Without the service academies, ND will still get to play USC, Stanford, Michigan, Michigan State and maybe Purdue.

ND will always have plenty of scheduling options.

Does joining the Big 12 really benefit Notre Dame all that much?

well, their non-football sports need a conference.

Notre Dame schedule will be too tough if that's the case. Those Big 12 teams on the schedule will be much more difficult plus you keep teams like Stanford, USC, Michigan, Michigan State - ouch!

not one of our premium boards are even hinting at the possibility; last time this was brought up most of *insiders* expected the ACC as our first choice...fwiw.

B1G would gladly accept ND, dont be silly. also, the only two opponents on our schedule who are not expendable our Navy and USC. everyone else, even michigan, is not a "traditional rivalry"...we just happen to play them all the time.

both parties (UM and ND) have been rumored to be taking a break from the series for quite sometime.

Just because the UM game is expendable or not played every single year doesn't mean its not a traditional rival. Most ND and UM people I've known consider it a rivalry game.

What's ND's record over the last 40 years vs Navy? I'd want to keep them on the schedule too. I'm sure everyone in South Bend gets way more pysched up for Navy week than Michigan week

hard to consider it a traditional rivalry when both parties plan on taking a break from the series....maybe your definition of rivalry is different than mine?

and the history of the navy game is why we keep it and always will; great story behind it.
